Disco has gone through many evolutions since its prime in the 1970’s, but at its core it has remained relatively the same. Funky grooves, infectious vocals, and most importantly, a powerful, steady beat came together to create a unique sound that captivated dancers everywhere and defined itself as a staple of the decade.
While still very much a niche genre, today’s incarnation (known as nu-disco) sees these classic elements married with modern day production techniques and equipment, revitalizing the classic genre into a unique sound that has been pushed by the likes of Funky Panda, Monstercat, and others.
The newest person to jump on the soul train is house legend Nicky Romero, who has signed a brand new nu-disco track by Dumbers & Maximal. The tune employs some classic EDM tricks such as pitched/chopped up vocals and a wide sub-bass, while pairing them with the infectious guitars and complex basslines that were so prevalent in disco music.
With this tune, as well as Romero’s own collab with disco veteran Nile Rodgers, Protocol Recordings is establishing themselves as a label that loves to push out diverse sounds to listeners that might not be too familiar with it. But if the quality of this song is any indication, nu-disco is about to get a whole lot more popular.
