UK duo Dusky have become legends in their own right for pushing creative boundaries in all of their pursuits. The 17 Steps label bosses’ unique and skillful approach to producing fusions of house and techno have resulted in a catalog of hits like “Careless,” “Skin Deep,” and their highly acclaimed Stick By This album. Following their recent remix of KINK’s “Perth,” Dusky returns with a moody, emotionally-driven piece of work that’s easily one of our favorites from the duo to date – Aset Forever.
The five-track EP is a tribute to their late friend Jan Francis, who tragically lost his life in 2017. Founder of the ATG graffiti crew and School Records, Jan was responsible for Dusky’s first London gigs both at ATG Warehouse parties and their residency at Corsica Studios, Staunch, which is the title of the third track on the EP. The grief and healing process that Dusky must have endured can be heard in the multitude of layers and textures that make up a beautiful, heartbreaking symphony of vintage breakbeat house, entrancing techno, and deep, rolling basslines. As an artist and curator known as Aset, Jan broke down many borders through his striking works of art. Dusky follows suit in this brilliant tribute.
While “Amongst the Gods” has been a staple in their sets this past year, nothing makes us want to run to the nearest warehouse more than the hard-hitting sounds of ‘The Ace” and “Staunch,” clearly inspired by time spent with Jan during their up-and-coming years.
