In 2014, Earphunk brought their Sweet Nasty funk stylings to Atlanta with String Cheese’s Kyle Hollingsworth, and back one year like clockwork they will return to Terminal West for what is sure to be an exciting night brought to you by this prog-funk quintet. This time The Main Squeeze will be joining them on this “May The Phunk Be With You” tour stop, doors opening at 8 p.m. and the music kicking off right around 9 p.m.
Christian Galle (keyboards/organ), despite a packed touring schedule, let us pick us brain on behalf of the band, answering questions on upcoming studio releases, they’re favorite artists to collaborate with, and how their epic compliment from George Clinton went down.
How much do you credit the Earphunk sound to your NOLA roots? What other influencers have played a part in shaping your style?
NOLA was obviously instrumental in providing our funk foundation. We’ve been surrounded by original music all of our lives. Beyond that, we can attribute a lot of our influences to other jazz, classic rock, blues, soul, R&B, etc.
Do you guys have any plans in the works for a follow up to Sweet Nasty?
Yes! We just got finished recording with Steve Albini in Chicago this past week. He is the man and we cannot wait to share what he helped us create.
Who are a couple of your favorite bands to tour and collaborate with and why?
We’ve had a lot of fun with guys like Kyle Hollingsworth and his band, Joey Porter and the Motet guys, the Galactic guys, because they’re good players and more importantly good people.
What has been the most memorable show you’ve played to date and why?
Definitely Jazz Fest at the Gentilly Stage this past April. It was a childhood dream come true!
Please paint us a picture of the scene in which George Clinton said, Y’all ain’t your average white band!
We were playing a festival in Atlanta, the slot before George was to play on the same stage. He was cheering us on between songs, which was incredibly surreal. After our set he greeted us with the above quote. We were stoked. He was really cool, took pics with us and whatnot.
Do you guys have anything special planned for your return to Terminal West?
You can count on it!
