Electric Daisy Carnival in Chicago just ended and for some members of the town, it couldn’t have come sooner. Over 500 noise complaints were heard by public officials throughout the weekend.
While EDC Chicago took place in Joliet, Illinois, noise complaints were voiced in towns much further away. Just like what happened in South Carolina at Patriot’s Point, the sound isn’t expected to carry that far and unknowing residents phone the police. Except Chicago has a lot more sense than South Carolina.
Joliet Mayor Tim Balderman,
“[Insomniac] was really responsive to our concerns and tried to do anything they could to help us.”
In working with the Joliet Police Department, Insomniac was able to reduce the stage volume by 33% and move the fireworks time back to 10PM. Noise was still an issue, but the impact was reduced. Overall there’s an overwhelming amount of positivity coming out of Chicago.
Joliet City Manager Thomas Thanas commented,
“It was a peaceful and fun-loving crowd,” he said, adding that he attended on Saturday night. “I get complaints, ‘What do we have in town for kids to do?’ We brought an international event to town.”
For a small government city manager, it must be a huge deal to bring an international event like EDC to their town. The other locations for the festival are much larger than Joliet, Illinois population 150,000.
EDC Chicago Lives On
The volume and hours of the festival probably be changed, but in an official news release the town reconfirms that they plan on moving forward with EDC Chicago 2014 if the promoter agrees.
“[If Insomniac] determines that an encore is in the future, then city officials will work with the promoter in developing a plan to address the noise issue.”
First year festivals are either incredible or disaster. There’s usually no in between… see Counterpoint / Moonrise.
We were on site EDC Chicago and cannot wait to share our review and family photos will you.

Correction: We confused Joliet for Juliet a few times before. Thanks to Mollyemma for helping us out with that one.
