While there were many differences between EDC NY 2015 and 2016, Insomniac kept a few constants: an incredible two days of music, magical experiences and the ability to re-unite the most important headliners of all. YOU. We expected changes with the change in location from Metlife Stadium in New Jersey, to Citifield in Queens, NY as it had been two years back, and all of them were for the betterment and enjoyment of all.
The one thing that never changes with EDC, no matter if it’s in Orlando, NY, or Las Vegas, is that the stages are always stunning. The colorful, unique, and positive themes are continuously uplifting and always bring the perfect accompaniment to the slue of genres and people that attend each stage. The mystical owl has been traveling with us for the past year, from it’s first take-off at EDC Las Vegas 2015 to EDC Orlando, to EDC NY, and while he’ll be sorely, we are very excited to see what EDC Las Vegas 2016 with it’s 20 year anniversary has in store.
While the weather was iffy and the wind blew hard the second day, it didn’t stop the people of EDC from reaping all the benefits of the amazing weekend held by Insomniac. Pasquale’s promises of what EDC would bring this year to the Big Apple held true. Continued amazing production all stages and extended set times ensued giving fans the chance to enjoy their favorite artists for a longer period of time. Additionally, the rides, VIP sections, and art installations all lived up to their hype, and artist meet and greets were even included in this years rendition of the popular festival.
The lineup was littered with everything from heavy bass to melodic trance giving anyone who attended a broad array of music to enjoy. Some of our favorite sets from day one included, TJR, Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in NY, Bixel Boys, The Magician and The Martinez Brothers. Within the first three minutes TJR had the crowd of kineticFIELD going insane with live scratching which melded into Travis Scott’s “Antidote” his high energy set hit almost every sub genre giving those in the crowd an array of sounds to dance to and dancing hard is exactly what he had everyone doing.
Taking a step into cosmicMEADOW, our first mind-blowing set of the day was Bixel Boys. We’ve seen them destroy the Mystical Frames stage at TomorrowWorld before, and they did not hold back here in NY. With the crowd pouring in from the subway, it was a fire-infused set of funky electro house that had everyone grooving.
Later in the night you could have found us enjoying the deep sounds of Hot Since 82 whose set lasted a blissful two and a half hours. He lit up the neonGARDEN stage with lasers and lavish sounds that had you shuffling all night long including another sneak peak of OC & Verde’s “Maasai” to later be released and the crowd definitely welcomed this track with open arms.
After an incredible day one, day two fast approached and though much windier and a bit colder than day one we were still excited for what was in store. As soon as you entered the festival an art car set to look like a boombox was dead center and you could find attendees dancing to the beats of Kids Want Techno, a duo made up of Jordan McLeod and Adam Solhjou, hailing from Washington, D.C. Their ability to dip into any genre of electronic music within their sets graced the gathering crowd with everything from Two Friends’ remix of Blink 182’s “I Miss You” to Croatia Squad and Lika Morgan’s “Make Your Move.” Their charismatic energy and f*ck genres attitude drew in a hefty crowd ready to dance and start day two off on the best note possible.
Moving into the afternoon we were excited to migrate over and to get a taste of what kineticFIELD on day two had to offer. We started things off right with catching the end of Chris Lake trying to get people moving and warmed up, and then Don Diablo finished the job with us grooving to some Hexagon jams. After checking out some of the rides throughout the afternoon such as the Tinder Matchmaker (which was a huge hit), we returned for the progressive house master, Eric Prydz. Things started off great, but within a few minutes Eric had to leave the stage within 15 minutes of his set due to high winds causing the main stage to shut down for concern of the artist. After about 10 minutes (while everyone was dancing in circles to keep themselves warm), Eric was able to return with a Cirez D focused set that was darkly perfect. Nothing could express this better than as he finished his set, a rainbow appeared overhead to give a nod to the crowd, that everything was A-ok.
Closing out you had the choice between Kaskade, Excision, Nicole Moudaber and Dillon Francis. We made the great decision of choosing Dillon Francis and between his hilarious graphics and dance floor filth music selections it was the best choice to make. He had earlier tweeted that he would be throwing a good amount of moombahton into his set and that’s exactly what he did along with plenty of Trap and House. Starting out the beginning of his set with “Not Butter” he set the tone for what would be nothing short of a high energy set.
With both days complete, headliners headed back to their cars, Ubers and trains with memorable impressions and experiences to last a lifetime. The continued vibrancy of Insomniac events is a feat that must be seen and experienced first hand. If you didn’t make it this year be sure to put it on your bucket list because you wont be disappointed.
