The electronic dance music world over the past several years has grown more rapidly then almost any genre in history. It’s prominent rise to global status can be attributed back to the music; and the men and women who make it possible. With its history dating back to the clubs of Europe, there seem to be very few of these DJs who still remain around till this day. Whether it be their music just isn’t good enough or their music is just meant for the history books, it takes more than just a unique sound to span several decade while maintaining global status.
Maurizio Colella, also known as EDX, has become one of these DJs for more reasons than one. With a new generation of music lovers being ushered into the new global sound, it comes as no surprise as to why EDX still maintains that global status.
Coming onto the European dance scene back in 1990, EDX began his career as remix DJ. With a true passion for electronic dance music, EDX turned what once was a dream into a reality. Gaining his passion and love for the music from the likes of Carl Cox and Laurent Garnier, he took those ideas and turned them into sound. When asked about these icons who influenced him so greatly, EDX said:
For me as DJ, I would say I was very enthusiastic about someone like Carl Cox, and when it comes to be really cool DJ and feeling the vibe, you can definitely say Laurent Garnier was that DJ for me. He was like my super hero in like 1992 and 1993. He had this energy that everyone wanted to see and he was creating something special behind the decks.
As we fast forward more than 20 years from when EDX broke into the music scene back in 1990, one can say a lot has changed. With the electronic dance music world continuing to expand on a daily basis so is EDX’s fan base, old and new. Armed with a unique progressive tech sound, his music has become more popular than ever. With major releases such as “Reckless Ador” and “The Tempest”, which dabble in different sub-genres of electronic dance music, both tracks have that undertone of EDX flare. When asked about his unique sound, EDX responded:
Music production is something very interesting. You travel the world and often times you just sit outside in a coffee shop and you hear a new sound, you talk to someone new, you hear something on the radio. What I am really doing is collecting all these different sounds which can all be blended together to make something new. Its then when you get into the studio you can use all these new sounds and put them into a song. With all my different experiences it helps come together to make that unique EDX sound possible.
The Italian born producer, unlike most, has seen the rise of this new generation of electronic dance music first hand. What started out in the clubs of Europe has finally taken over the United States and all of North America. But with such a takeover it was only a matter of time before the newest generation became full educated on the different realms that make up electronic dance music. From Las Vegas to New York, EDX has seen fans begin to take to all genres of EDM rather than just classifying all the music into one category. We asked EDX about this new generation of educated fans and he had this to say:
People are getting more enthusiastic about electronic dance music, not only in clubs, but at festivals as well. It’s like becoming a lifestyle which is similar to 20 years ago in Europe with the techno generation. Definitely this high that it has hit in the United States is starting to bounce back to other countries and starting to re-push that festival generation in Europe again.
The promoters aren’t classifying this music anymore as just EDM, they are beginning to split it up especially with people starting to get more educated with what is good EDM and what is bad EDM. People are getting to know progressive, techno, trance, deep house, so I feel like in the beginning you could just put someone on stage and people would come out, but people are starting to look more behind it and find their own style.
This lifestyle that is remerging in Europe and emerging in the United States is what continues to fuel the world of electronic dance music everyday. As the world grows so does EDX and with over 20 years of experience it comes as no surprise as to why the sound of EDX continues to become more appreciated on a daily basis. With 2014 in full swing, EDX is set to have several big releases on the horizon and fans should be ready for more EDX to come. What started out in 1990 continues on through 2014, and us fans of EDX are more excited than ever.
