72 days until we step foot in Rothbury, MI. As summer creeps closer so does the pilgrimage to Electric Forest and, if you’re like me, you couldn’t be any more excited. Although Electric Forest kicked off the year with a rocky start amidst rumors of possible cancellation due to legal troubles, it is now full steam ahead as we churn towards June 26th. Since our last spotlight featuring EOTO, an impressive Phase 2 artist announcement was released to the public and we now we wait, baited for Phase 3.
In this artist spotlight we take a closer look at one of the heavy hitters on the EF bill, Zeds Dead. Whether you’re a fan of Bass-music or not, you can’t deny these two throw down an eclectic set covering multiple genres, sure to be one of the more anticipated sets of the festival. Whether you’re a seasoned vet of all things ZD or a casual newcomer, read on and get familiar with these two before it’s too late. Zeds Dead baby…Zeds Dead!
Representing Toronto, Canada: Zeds Dead is a duo comprised of Dylan Mamid (a.k.a. DC) and Zach Rapp-Rovan (a.k.a. Hooks). These two joined forces in 2004, went on to form Zeds Dead in 2009, and released their debut EP Rudeboy (2009). With sounds ranging from heavy Dub, to melodic Dubstep, to Electro, to Trap and more, these two run the gamut of all things electronic. Given the honor of headlining this year, Electric Forest won’t be uncharted territory for these guys. In 2012 they found themselves nicely slotted into the supporting acts section of the EF lineup. Nothing to sneeze at, but their headlining status this year is very much indicative of how quickly they have exploded in popularity since their humble beginnings.
In the past few years, Zeds Dead has landed themselves slots at major festivals such as EDC Orlando, NYC, and Vegas among others. The duo offer the unique ability to throw down as hard as any artist out there, then reel it back in at a moments notice, with help from a diverse catalog of music. Currently signed to Mad Decent, ZD is also known for their generous amount of mixtapes they put out for free download. Although it doesn’t substitute for experiencing these two live, these mixes serve as a great medium to give fans a taste of their style and feature sick DJs like Destructo, EDX, Deorro, The M Machine, and Zomboy.
Come time for Electric Forest you know where you can find me. Getting down to the signature beats of DC and Hook in the Sherwood Forest has the potential to be a downright magical experience. We’ve made it this far, the end is in sight. Soon enough we will be in paradise surrounded by the good vibes that is Electric Forest. Stay on the lookout for future spotlights as we draw closer! But whatever you do, listen to Juicy J’s advice, and “you say no to ratchet”…well. Just listen to the track below.
