Hailing from Toronto, Canada, the nu disco, indie dance, synthpop, Electric Youth is composed of Austin Garrick and Bronwyn Griffin, childhood sweethearts that have been dating since the 8th grade. With Bronwyn’s airy and sublime voice accompanied by Austin’s synth pops and disco beats, these two have created something truely specialy with their debut album “Innerworld”. In July 2014, Electric Youth was nominated by Rolling Stone as part of their “10 New Artists You Need to Know“. Considering that at the time Electric Youth did not have a full EP nor album completed, impressive would be the word that comes to mind. But what makes their enchanting, synth-filled beats so different, so happy, and so fulfilling. They go on to say the following about their
For their upcoming debut, Innerworld, they actually worked with Yaz’s Vince Clarke and play the iconic Yamaha CS80. “It’s probably the most expressive synthesizer ever built,” says Garrick. “People know it best as the synthesizer Vangelis used to create the Blade Runner soundtrack, but texture-wise it works wonders for modern productions. Our interest in the pursuit of [the] timeless is not about nostalgia, it’s about longevity,” says Garrick. “The thought of recreating the past with music is not interesting to us, it’s probably been the biggest misconception of our music and what we’re about thus far. The reality is, we’re much more interested in creating things for the future than things from the past. We are nostalgic people, not in the sense that we long for a different time, because we love the present, but how could we not be reminded of the past when every day, we see the person we had a crush on since 7th grade?”
The song that caught a lot of attention for Electric Youth three years ago was “A Real Hero” that was part of the Drive soundtrack, which some say may be the best song ever used for the finishing credits of a movie ever. With almost 20 million views, I would say that a lot of other people feel the same way.
“‘A Real Hero’ in Drive was the first time our music had been seen and heard in it’s intended context, meaning that we’re always film inspired and our music is very cinematically driven.
“Innerworld” is a journey, an adventure, and untold story. From the beginning with “Before Life” that floats you into a different reality, “Runaway” and “WeAreTheYouth” journeying through an adolescent awakening, to “If All She Has Is You” and “The Best Thing” as love blossoms, it’s hard to describe in words these elated and heartsick lyrics and synths for yourself, so go do that instead now.
Currently, their album is not available on Soundcloud, however the full album is streaming on Spotify and two of the debut songs below are available on Youtube. Purchase the full album on iTunes or Amazon.com.
