Beaming with Cali-cool swag, DJ and producer Kevin Andrew Chapman launched onto the scene just a few years ago as Sunset House DJ, SNBRN. Fittingly to his moniker and sound, one of his first big hits was the 2015 original track “California,” a deliciously funky rendition of Tupac and Dr. Dre’s “California Love.” In that same year, this LA native dropped more originals and remixes like “Rain Drops” and “Ace of Base,” solidifying himself as a force to be reckoned with in a new generation of deep house bosses. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to not have a proper good time in the presence of SNBRN; his music is booming with deep, funky sounds and laid-back, sensual feels, while his performances are uplifting, energetic, and delivered with such ease. Now boasting 157k followers and over 47 million plays on Soundcloud and Spotify, he’s been busy hitting up some of the biggest festivals in the world, with the most recent being Coachella. But before we even get into it any further, let’s catch you up to speed on SNBRN so that you’ll quickly realize why you’d be a fool to miss his set at Elements Lakewood.
Already considered a classic of his, “California” featuring Kaleena Zanders exudes all of the deep and fresh vibes that have come to be associated with SNBRN’s sound. In 2015, he dropped it in his set at Electric Zoo and the crowd went wild, to say the least. Those that knew of him had there “YES” moment, while others being introduced for the first time were completely enthralled in all of the track’s goodness.
We first came across SNBRN through his 2014 remix of Melanie Martinez’s “Carousel” (like when it was cool to Shazam songs). To this day, it’s still one of our all time favorites. Clearly, we’re not alone on this as its amassed close to 4 million listens on Soundcloud and Spotify alike. His infusion of a deep base line brings out the eerie, yet incredibly mystifying energy from the singer’s vocals, creating a tune that (in our opinion) is exceeds the original.
Not many artists successfully roll out one massive original hit after another when they first start out, but SNBRN has managed to do just that. Some of the tracks you’re more than likely to be familiar with are “Raindrops,” “Beat the Sunrise,” and “Gangsta Walk.”
SNBRN has a knack for giving new life to throwbacks. His remixes of Mark Morrison’s “Return of the Mack,” Ace of Base’s “All She Wants,” and Marvin Gaye’s infamous “Sexual Healing” are down right deep, sexual, and immensely satisfying to the soul. Other popular ones that have hit the high millions in listens are his remixes of Pretty Ricky ft. 50 cent’s “Grind with Me” and 50 Cent’s “21 Questions.”
Less than a month ago, SNBRN played back-to-back weekends at Coachella, where he set the Sahara tent ablaze. He even recorded a video of veteran security claiming that that was the earliest he’s ever seen the house packed, which is saying something for a stage that has been host to some of the biggest names in this industry, like Swedish House Mafia and Skrillex. SNBRN responded with a photo on his Facebook page saying “Give me an early time spot and I’ll still pull up.” He also posted a video of the wall-to-wall filled crowd going mental to his latest remix of Jax Jones’s “House Work.” For those of you unfamiliar with the track, give it a listen below and imagine yourself two-stepping/jackhammering to its deep, dark beat.
