Pretty Lights Music darling Eliot Lipp has gained a lot of recognition as of late. A burgeoning musical catalogue and the backing of several powerful forces have equipped Lipp with the necessary tools to leave a lasting mark on the electro-soul scene, if he plays his cards right. So far Lipp has managed a careful balance of convention and variation, satisfying new fans and diehards alike with a mixed portfolio of work. Lipp’s latest move is the release of his LP Watch the Shadows, a tribute to melodies of the past while also paying respect to the musical possibilities of the future.
I was listening to an old jazz song and this one lyric & melody were really jumping out at me. I traced the melody all the way back to very early Spanish folk music from the 1500s. The way the melody had survived and evolved over such a long period of time really amazed me. It made me want to make modern music that pays respect to the endless forgotten beauty of the past, and at the same time, adds to the not yet discovered inspiration of the future.
Lipp may be somewhat of a dark horse, but his knack for producing is not lost upon the ears of the music industry. Having been recognized as one of the “Top 10 Fastest Rising DJs of 2013” by Vibe Magazine, it’s clear that critics are heeding the rising career of this promising artist. Yet another crowd-pleaser, melodic, hip- hop-infused tracks lay the groundwork for Watch the Shadows, but the true hook lies within the ability to maintain the listener’s focus. By traversing genres and exploring new territories, Lipp devises an LP which is refreshingly varied.
Artists such as Cherub and Nick Bockrath of Cage the Elephant are featured on the album, each adding their own signature touches and contributing to the overall diverse nature of the LP. Title track “Watch the Shadows” provides a funky intro to the album; its mesmerizing beat blended with a soulful reggae sample grips the listener’s fascination for the long haul. Nu-disco influences permeate “The Western,” an obvious Cherub collaboration and perhaps LP’s the most danceable track.
All albums released under the Pretty Lights Music Label are offered to fans free of charge, and Watch the Shadows is no exception.
