The Electric Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York announced that they would be shutting down their rave scene because of excessive drugs sales during their events. The club says that they have enjoyed to host these events over the past few years, but are being put in an “untenable position”. They also allege that they have no other choice [emphasis mine] but to stop hosting raves.
The statement is an absolute disgrace to all of reputable venue owners and promoters everywhere. It’s also a disgrace to the dance music scene. The Electric Warehouse is poorly attempting to pawn off the problems in their business that they could not control, to the customers who provided “years of patronage”.
Essentially they’re blaming the customers for the poor environment that they’ve allowed to flourish in their establish. Excessive drug sales don’t just randomly occur. If a nightclub has a reputation of being drug friendly, it’s for good reason. Reputations aren’t built overnight.
The problem isn’t with the raves and it’s not with the music. It’s with venues like this. Club drugs are nothing new, just some venues have control over what happens inside of them. Others don’t.
It appears however that they also have a few more problems.
The nightlife industry is dangerous. There’s no denying the number of risks involved. It’s the business owner or management’s job to decide what risks they are willing to take. If canceling raves and stopping electronic music events seems like correct business decision, then do it. No one will be upset.
However if you’re trying to solicit pity and make people feel bad because you’re unable to control your business… well that’s just embarrassing.
