The Swedish producer Engvall recently put out his chill ambient electronic track “Rapsfält.” Rapsfält translates to Colza field or Rapeseed Field, which is a type of flowering plant found all throughout Europe and the USA. Colza oil or colza is a non-drying oil obtained from the seeds of rapeseed. It is a comparatively non-odoriferous oil of a yellow color, and the cake (leftover waste) left after extraction of the oil is a valuable feed ingredient for pigs.
The oil these plants create is used contemporary in bio-diesel, but historically the colza oil was used in the calming of choppy seas, where the oil modifies the surface tension of the water and rapidly smooths the surface. The Rapsfält plant was used as a powerful tool of the Cunning folk to bring peace to the land (and sea especially) during times of turmoil. This is not unlike Engvall’s attempt to bring peace of mind with his track of the same name.
The track “Rapsfält” is a short, heavy melodic and ambient journey. It starts with many instruments in reverse, almost calling us to go back. Perhaps to a moment of innocence, many lose as they age. The voice is then brought in, harmonizing with itself in a distance. Its chant-like, feeling more gestural than specific, as if the artist is merely trying to let the voice escape in a moment of catharsis.
It is nice to hear a track that takes a step back and reminds us to breathe, especially with everything going on in the world right now.
