Breaking Down The Madness That Is Excision’s 2014 Shambhala Mix

Now that we’ve had enough time to collect ourselves and pick our faces up off the ground we can delve into the sheer terror that is Excision’s latest Shambhala mix. Monday was like an unexpected bass Christmas for dubstep enthusiasts, and we all got exactly what we hoped for. Excision’s 6th and latest Shambhala mix touches on everything from the most obscene, head banging dub out there to heavy trap and electro.

It’s this kind of versatility that allows him to be at the forefront of the bass scene; appealing to fans of genres all across the board but staying loyal to the fans who have helped him get to this point. Although you definitely want to listen to all 81 tracks in its entirety, check below to find my stand out tracks from the mix.

MUST DIE! x CRNKN – The Palmtop Tiger

Must Die! makes some of the heaviest bass music out here today, and combined with the trademark trap of CRNKN they struck gold on this one. It’s easy to sense the influences of each artist here. With the initial high energy drop out of the way, it all builds up to the absurdity of the 2:45 mark. What you hear is dub and trap meshing flawlessly, making even the most seasoned dub head hold on to their face for dear life.

Aweminus – IJDGAF (VIP)

Probably my favorite part of the mix when transitioned after “Without You”. Honestly, I wasn’t aware of Aweminus before hearing this on the mix but I’ll be sure to keep an eye out now. There’s not much to say about track this except “ew”. Heavy, aggressive bass is the standard for Excision and this is a track that work would work flawlessly in a mix or liveset.

Excision & Bassnectar – Put It Down (Crizzly Remix)

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past few months you’ve certainly heard this one before. Crizzly gave the remix treatment to the hit made with Bassnectar, and the result we have is a trap-ified banger. Excision will drop this regularly in his set and the crowd will never fail to absolutely lose it..sometimes even the best of us just need to take a minute to twerk it out.

Doctor P – Going Gorillas

Doctor P is an OG. He’s been making some of the best bass music out here for the better part of the last decade and his latest masterpiece could be one of his best yet. Combining sounds of trap, electro, and dubstep he struck gold on “Going Gorillas” and it’s been a favorite in the festival circuit this past year. High energy bass music like this seems to be the winning ticket right now, and it’s hard to argue when you hear something like this.

Borgore – Kiss My Lips

Remember when Borgore made good music? Me too! This classic from the Tel-Aviv native is everything we came to love about Borgore in the first place. A far cry from some of the progressive house/big room being put out today, “Kiss My Lips” was one of the tracks that put Borgore on the map. Extremely heavy bass and that trademark Borgore sound run rampant throughout, making this the perfect throwback for Excision to include.

I Am Legion – Choosing For You (Nightwatch Remix)

Undoubtably I Am Legion’s crowning jewel so far, “Choosing For You” can be heard anywhere from commercials to festival main stages. Nasty trap is always what the doctor ordered, and Nightwatch took an already perfect track and made it…more perfect. Speeding things up to make it an absolute weapon of mass destruction when dropped live, this will always be one of my favorites.

Excision & Space Laces – Destroid 7 Bounce VIP

If you’re listening to this mix I’m sure you’re already enough of a fan to have heard this one before. For some reason this never gets old to me. The VIP version is nasty Destroid at their finest, and it was only appropriate for Excision to begin rounding out his mix with this. Paying homage to a track that’s made Destroid the bass kingpins they are, it doesn’t get much heavier than this.

Gent & Jawns – Let Em Know

Off their newly released “Faded” EP, “Let Em Know” is another favorite of Excision’s to drop live. A second example of trap, electro, and dub meshing beautifully, this was an obvious choice to find a spot in this years Shambhala mix. Making an appearance a little more than halfway through, this track could very well represent the peak of this years mix.

Trampa – Get Wicked

Off of Never Say Die Records, Trampa is a name I’m sure many of the diehards are already familiar with. There’s massive crossover appeal in both fan bases, and with a sound that compliments Excision’s perfectly it’s not surprising. Just kick back and shake your head in disgust to yet another gem off the mix.
