Last week, Far Too Loud and Astronaut released their mega-collaboration “War,” a track that not only packs serious power but takes the electro genre to new heights. WRR caught up with Far Too loud and Astronaut on the specifics of what went into “War,” as well as their view on the EDM scene in general.
What was the creative process like behind “War?”
Astronaut – “War” was originally a tune that we had started about a year ago but only recently decided to re-visit the project. We’ve been meaning to work with Far Too Loud on a track for ages so it seemed like a great project to start from together. He has a really cool studio down on the sea front in Brighton, UK. We had an awesome time down there and leaving the studio to get Ice Cream and fish and chips every so often haha.
Far Too Loud – In short, after I got the project from them I added some of my own ideas, then we got together and finished the track off. It worked like this with my recent Electrixx collab too. It’s nice to have that final stretch of the writing process together in the same room as ideas flow much quicker.
How would you describe the state of electro, electro-house, and EDM scenes in 2014?
Astronaut – To be honest, we don’t know much about the electro scene right now. All our favourite electro tracks are from a few years back like Firepower by Wolfgang Gartner and Super Meat Freeze by Mord Fustang so we end up taking a lot of influence from that era! I think it’s a good thing not to be too influenced by everyone else that is big in electro house at the moment because it separates our tracks from the current sound a bit more.
Far Too Loud – For me electro house, and progressive house for that matter, have had their definitions mutated. Big room and melbourne bounce fall under the electro house banner, although there are those would say they don’t belong there. In general, dance music genres have developed, combined and diverged but the labels by which they are sold haven’t been updated so it’s all got a bit confused. What I think of as the real complextro sound has died down but I’m finding enough interesting new music to throw in my sets, people like Botnek, Cobra Effect, Charlie Darker and Aylen are really doing it for me right now.
How was Astronaut and Far Too Loud’s producing style different and similar when working on “War” in the studio?
Astronaut – We’ve got a pretty similar workflow, but I have to say that watching Oli work on music was really inspiring. We’re really slow in the studio but Oli knew all the hot keys and seemed to know exactly how to make each sound do what he wanted without to much messing around and experimenting. Pretty cool!
Far Too Loud – We both use Ableton and a number of the same plug-ins so there wasn’t much contrariness, was quite easy really!
Could you guys see yourselves working with each other again in the future?
Astronaut – Absolutely! We worked really well together and had a lot of fun, so who knows…
Oli – For sure!
