Anyone who knows me is well aware of my love affair with 20syl, a French producer who makes dirty remixes and original productions. I must have played his remix of the “The Purge/Rapfix Cypher” by Schoolboy Q at least a thousand times in the last few months. While digging into his music I came across his other project, C2C.
Coups2Cross, aka C2C is a quartet of French DJs, composed of Atom, Pfel, 20syl, and Greem. In 1998 the high school friends became a group, and in 2006 they won their fourth consecutive DMC Team World Championship. In 2012 they released an EP, Down The Road, and a full length album, Tetra, which set them up for mainstream success. Breakbeat, turntablism and hip-hop beats will greet your ears when you play one of their tunes, and their scratching is on par with the likes of A-Trak and DJ Craze. Below are my five favorite tracks that they have released in the last year.
Superstition (Remix)
Starting off with their most recently released track, a funky remix of Stevie Wonder‘s “Superstition.” The very first note reminds me of “Total Fascination” by Pretty Lights, before the tracks launches you into a groove. The original lyrics of this track are some of my all time favorites, so combining them with the funk of C2C’s production is a dream come true.
When a Fire Starts to Burn (Remix)
A couple weeks ago C2C decided to take on Disclosure’s massive hit “When a Fire Starts to Burn.” Of course it immediately exploded and now has over 500,000 plays on SoundCloud. This track goes a little deeper, edging on trap. Fast repetitive lyrics, bass, and of course their signature scratches, all come out to play on this record, and I’m loving it.
Happy
The first original of C2C to make the list is “Happy” off the Tetra album. It’s an upbeat gospel-style jam that you have to play loud. D. Martin provides the soul for the lyrics on the track, which fits perfectly with the organs. “Happy” is guaranteed to get you in a good mood or your money back.
Jericho (Remix)
The fellas dug deep for this remix of Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s 1956 hit “Jericho.” The soulful lyrics are combined with a hip-hop beat that breathes new life into this old song. The scratching is heard and always present. I’d love to catch these guys live just to see how well they would scratch in a live setting.
MOJO (Remix)
Last to make the list is their remix of Maison Barclay’s “MOJO.” Tons of electric guitar and scratching over the original make this song a groovy finale for the list. This is my favorite song of theirs, so I saved the best for last. Check out a playlist of all five of these songs at our SoundCloud page here.
