If today you woke up with a thirst that could only could be quenched by weird downtempo meshed with hip-hop then prepare to be satiated by Fadest, the final installment of a triad of albums from the man known as Thriftworks. Originally from Pennsylvania, Jake Atlas has been actively producing since 2008 and has since released an impressive discography of 11 albums. Fadest is his most recent effort which builds upon the hip-hop electronic foundation that he has forged while integrating new sounds and concepts that will have your mind going in a hundred different directions, buckle up and check out our favorite tracks off the album.
1. Perrenial Flight
After the diverse system of sounds that are “Pearly Whites” and “Lest you be Judged”, we are thrown into the third song off the album: “Perrenial Flight.” As always we get lush tones and perfectly matched percussion behind the chopped vocals that all come together flawlessly. No sound seems out of place on this track.
2. Wrist Wrist Wrist ft. Russ Liquid
Featuring one of WRR’s favorite artists Russ Liquid, “Wrist Wrist Wrist” is next on the list. As the fifth track on the album this serves as a halfway point for listeners who will float along on the sweet sound of the flute that (I assume) is provided by Russ. It’s another well designed track sonically and prepares your for the second half of the album.
3. Deem Teem
An interesting title accompanies the “hardest” track thus far. While other tracks on Fadest wander and play around before taking us to the break, “Deem Teem” immediately puts us in the throw down. Hard synths, deep vocals, and darkness shroud this track and get you feeling weird and maniacal. I’m loving the way Thriftworks is able to get inside you and move around your conciousness.
4. c12h17n2o4p
Another strange title, c12 (for short) is our first true hip-hop / downtempo track off the album. The unidentified rapper flows over the brooding, mysterious beat from Atlas. I would’ve liked to see more original hip-hop vocals on this album, as good vocals can successfully further the concepts that the artist wishes to convey. Unfortunately, c12 is the only such track on Fadest so we’ll enjoy it as it stands alone.
5. Terry’s Big Dab
As soon as the horns hit my ears on the last track of the album I knew it was going to get a spot on this list. More weirdness, but bundled and transmitted in a different way, “Terry’s Big Dab” is a combination of glitch and trap that makes your mind drift before being snapped back by the snares. An intricate song to end the series of albums in the Fade series.
If you enjoyed these tracks definitely check out the album below and support Thriftworks who gives a “name your price” option on his album!
