We’ve all been there: at a festival and without a signal. We try to find our friends, post our newest photo to Instagram, or try to load the lineup on our phones. Usually this is being done while we hold our phones up and pray to the festival gods that we get at least one bar. One bar. That’s all we’re asking for! If you’ve ever been in this predicament, you understand the frustration when all you want to do is get into contact with someone you really need to.
Many festivals have started to partner up with wifi or cell companies to provide wifi, but it comes at a cost. Usually, like in the case of EDCLV, data companies will partner up with another social app, only giving you speedy access to their specific app. Now, this could cause a problem because instead of SnapChatting a photo, you may have wanted to text it. Well, unless you can magically receive a signal, that probably isn’t going to happen.
Thanks to a new technology out of San Fransisco, signal deception might be a thing of the past. FireChat is an app that lets users communicate without using an internet connection. This is great for people who don’t want to drain their battery while looking for a cell signal or for the people who just need to get in touch with their friends. The app uses a phone’s bluetooth and wifi connection to feed off of other’s app to create a web of connectivity. The more people using FireChat, the stronger the signal is.
The cool thing about FireChat is that artists are starting to send out secret texts to fans using the app and festivals are starting to partner up with this innovative company.
As of now, the app can only communicate via text, but soon they will branch out to other medias. How cool would that be to upload a pic of Bassnectar without ruining your data plan? This app is definitely the wave of the future and its possibilities are endless.
