Kieran Hebden, known under the moniker Four Tet, has entangled fans in his hypnotic harmonics for the past 19 years. The mastermind of ethereal and experimental British dance music debuted his new track “Planet” on August 2nd and has garnered over 40K plays on Soundcloud over the following 24 hours.
The name of the song is actually quite ironic as Four Tet’s new track has the power to sweep listeners far, far away from the club – and possibly even planet Earth. The track’s pulsating 4/4 percussion is ripe for the dance floor, but Four Tet specializes in crafting compositions that mingle with our senses on a micro-level. Layers of twinkling bells and velvety looped vocals add a softness to the track that is the quintessential counterpart to the song’s steadily thumping bass line. Crystal clear chords from a medieval sounding stringed instrument elevate the track into a magical realm and are enough to hypnotize us into pressing repeat on the seven minute long track at least a few more times.
While we anxiously pine for a new album (Hebden reported to Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 that he has been working on new music for the past 10 months,) “Planet” is just the distraction we need.
