The singer/songwriter/producer who brought us the energetic electro-pop experience, “All This Time EP” is back with another out-of-this-world selection entitled “Throwdown EP,” via Firepower Records. The title suits the EP, as “Throwdown” packs more aggressiveness, passion, and energy within a 5-track collection than any of Fox Stevenson’s prior releases.
“High Five!” starts off “Throwdown” as a great introduction to Fox’s unique sound. The dramatic chord progressions are enhanced by Fox’s ever-passionate vocals. Then, the drop hits. The rhythm, the melody, the speed, the sound — it all hits you in a single second.
The “Throwdown” title track speeds things up with a a lyrically driven, drumstep original. Lyrics such as “If it’s real why can’t we see it, if it’s so strong why can’t we feel it,” are layered on the soft-pop bridges as Fox expresses the uncertainty that appears in so much in his music. Sooner after, a glitchy d’n’b drop takes over, showing off the marvelous intensity Fox can deliver.
“Double Up” slows the speed down to 70 BPM and focuses more on simple rhythms. The vocals, melody, and drop – all following each other within close proximity – sneak up on you with an explosion of power. The super vivid sound will have you maxing your volume and bobbing up-and-down.
“Manage” is more serious, but it still doesn’t stray far from the theme of “Throwdown EP.” One of the best parts of the entire EP is the slowed anthem section Fox builds at 3:30. “But in my heart you’ll always be a friend, ’cause I’m not sure I can manage without you,” is chanted moments before a magical drop packed with layers of colorful synths and frenzied basslines blasts through.
The closing tune, “All In,” beautifully expresses Fox Stevenson’s roots in 2000’s pop-punk. Rich, 4-chord progressions, poppy-yet-melancholy lyrics, and heart-warming sound effects come together to close a 5-piece story.
Fox Stevenson has it all: the brand, sound, talent, originality and personality. There’ are so many reasons to love him and respect his contribution to the electronic music scene. His remarkable drive to be different and his straight-from-the-soul music will always have a special place in thousands of fans’ hearts.
