Released on July 9th, and premiered live over this past weekend, Foxtail’s Kitsune is nothing short of masterclass musicality coupled with the precision and intelligent design within music production that is so coveted by audiophiles. Each track breathes a life of it’s own, weaving together a pallet of delicate melodies, fine tuned percussion, and tasteful composition. There are no dull moments to be had, and the general flavor of the release stretches from creamy downtempo to a well-mannered touch of drum and bass. Coming from the mind of the man who rightfully won the opportunity to open the weekend festivities for this year’s Tipper & Friends event in Suwannee, FL, this is a collection of sonic twists and turns that is deserving of nothing less than undivided attention.
“Allora” ropes you in right from the jump off with a haunting introduction reminiscent of a Baroque symphony. There are no builds or breakdowns, but instead a smooth progression of interwoven percussion lines and atmospheric synthesis.
“Moonshadow” does an excellent job of furthering the vibe set by the opening track, with it’s hushed tones and gentle piano arpeggios. There is a subtle rise in intensity as the track progresses that prepares the listener to dive farther into Kitsune’s inner workings.
“Dussek’s Sonata” flows into itself from a beautifully sampled piano concerto, and develops into a neuro-synthesis laden soundscape that expands upon the darker tones featured on the EP.
“Hyacinth” follows in the footsteps of the previous track, and espouses upon a growing presence of synth-work that develops throughout the progression of Kitsune. The rubbery texture of the bassline mingled with percussion that smacks with just the right amount of intensity serves to bring up anticipation for the EP’s climax point.
“Veil” brings about a glorious end to the musical journey, and is in and of itself quite the journey. An artisanal blend of ambient developments, drum and bass, and an ever encouraged half-time breakdown, “Veil” does the job that is best suited to the closing track of a release: Collecting the textures and tones that make the EP such a masterpiece and giving them all one final shot in the spotlight to shine as they should, and become a story telling medium that needs no language other than sound to move the listener to a place of satisfaction and ecstasy.
The Kitsune EP was released through the newly minted Rust Music label, which hosted their label launch party this past weekend, giving Foxtail his long-awaited east coast debut. From me to you, you’d do well to keep an eye on both Foxtail and The Rust to stay in the loop of cutting edge electronic music.
