Sydney-based DJ and Producer Friendless is prepared to capture your attention with his latest release “Shine On” via Melbourne record label Be Rich Records. The track samples a viral (and frankly, hilarious) motivational video and turns it into a club banger. We sat down with Friendless to talk about the latest release and his beginnings in the EDM scene. So, with “Shine On” playing in the background, read the full exclusive interview below:
RaverRafting: Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into music.
Friendless: I actually started off as a bass player in a punk band in high school which did quite well at the time, I knew that I wanted to do music and nothing else. The drummer from the band was super into dance music and production and showed me the ways of the dark side. He went on to be Bass Kleph and taught me a lot of what I know about making House Music.
RR: You’re from Sydney. How would you describe the music scene back there?
F: It’s been an interesting time in Sydney as the state governments have been putting increasing restrictions on late night trading as part of a pretty obvious plan to gentrify the Kings Cross area and what was the main nightclub precinct. But thankfully Australians aren’t ones to let legality get in the way of a good time so the underground scene is thriving and tonnes of artist collectives are throwing incredible parties around town in venues that have adapted well and in good old fashion warehouse rave style. Artistically the scene is stronger than its ever been especially for House Music and the more underground genres.
RR: What attracted you the most to EDM?
F: Not having to carry a Bass Amp around to my gigs.
RR: Your newest track “Shine On” is cool and also kinda funny! What made you sample this motivational video?
F: My wonderful friend Michaela Baranov (incredible singer, check her out!) actually sent me that clip after we’d done an amazing session together and she was as excited as the lady in the clip. The second I heard I knew I was gonna jack it and make a track around it!
RR: Do you think you can achieve anything if you ‘put your mind to it, put your grind to it’?
F: I like to think so! Sometimes it’s a matter of patience too.
RR: Describe your music in 4 words.
F: Dirty, Fresh, Fun & Obnoxious. Like me.
