Gem & Tauri have been teasing us throughout 2020 with releasing their first ever tracks, like their cheeky house tune, “Botany”, and serene deep house edits from their streams with Ophelia label head, Seven Lions, on Twitch. The lovely ladies behind the duo, Courtney Simmons and Emma Montalvo, have become an integral part of the Ophelia clan, with plenty of opening performances for showcases at Mission Ballroom, Mezzanine, Avant Gardner, Seven Lions’ Visions festivals on Twitch, and most recently Insomniac’s Gorge stream that commanded the attention of about 15k viewers. This past Saturday for Visions, we got to see the duo premiere their EP, and the night was full of smooth melodies, smiles, and fans flooding the chat. You can relive that magical night here.
Simmons and Montalvo have long been fans and active members of the EDM scene, with ten years of working and attending events, playing underground shows, and touring, it was high time they released music of their own. Under the wing of partner and label head, Jeff Montalvo aka Seven Lions, the two were able to delve into production and songwriting to create a fresh sound for fans to experience. All You Need has four tracks plus extra special extended mixes that give us a true inside look into Gem & Tauri’s audio landscapes. An incredibly revitalizing sound filtering through some of our favorite worlds of house including tech, deep, and progressive, All You Need, is a bright spot for Ophelia.
We open with “Calling Me Home” featuring long time Ophelia and Seven Lions’ vocalist partner, HALIENE, leading us strong into the EP. The synth work has a powerful punch as it climbs and descends throughout the track alongside a flowing river of rhythm. Next is the title track, “All You Need”, featuring Fiora’s ethereal vocals. We get an intriguing juxtaposition of punching bass, snapping high hat, and enveloping melody as we are bathed in a floating bliss. Next up we see a collab with Advent artist and Ophelia freshman, Arpyem, and vocalist Jared Lee. We get to have a few tranquil moments of pure melody swirling around us before we fall into the chorus that we can’t help but find to be the ear worm of the EP. The bass bounces and discover ourselves vibing hard in our living rooms. Closing us out is “Dusk”, which has quickly become the crowd favorite, with Simmons and Montalvo teasing it in past sets. A progressive groove is wrapped up with warm, echoing vocals and is a non-stop curious journey that has our full attention.
