Gent & Jawns have done it again with their huge release for festival season, COCO. The song starts with a beat that brings a somewhat tropical flavor to the basic trap intro, & the vocal riff “Coco Rota” (“broken coconut” in Spanish) is repeated a handful of times. As is always the case in G&J songs, the drums truly stand out here – with a bubbly feeling and lots of texture and dynamics present in the beat’s structure.
The duo who Diplo said have “more tattoos than all of his friends combined,” flex their production muscles hard here by taking a dry, tightly knit beat and instantaneously creating space within the song as it reaches the drop – the low end is crisp and warm sounding, and some down-pitched vocal chops are what create the melody and drive the song forward. These vocal chops change over time, getting higher pitched and giving the song a manic, cartoonish feel at moments.
As strange as it sounds, if I had to guess, I’d say that Donkey Kong was a large inspiration to Billy & Long as they were writing this song. The new monkey character they have as the G&J mascot, along with the broken coconut reference & the excited, animated feeling present in parts of the song all hint towards this… But maybe I’m reaching too far. Either way, this song bangs and you can bet you’ll be hearing a ton of it throughout the spring and festival seasons.
