Russ Liquid Test, a group from New Orleans, is pushing boundaries in the music scene by combining several different sounds to create a one of a kind show. The trio including the lyricist/brass specialist Russell Scott, guitarist Andrew Block, and Deven Trusclair on the percussion side are fusing their unique backgrounds in music to mystify crowds with an unrivaled psychedelic groove. RaverRafting.com had the chance to ask RLT some questions before their upcoming show at Suwannee’s Hulaween over Halloween weekend to get to know the group better and to get some answers behind the making of their unusual sound.
RR– Do you have any pre-show rituals?
RLT – Can’t go into detail but a Voodoo doll is involved…
RR –What has been your favorite show/festival to perform at?
RLT – That’s a hard question. They all are awesome in their own unique way. We got to open for our homies LETTUCE at RED ROCKS this year which was epic.
RR –What puts you into the creative mindset to start writing a song?
RLT – Depends on the song. Usually writing music is kinda like a diary of emotions so it depends on what’s going on in life whenever we writing. The creativity is always there… it’s a matter of sitting down and creating a physical representation of the dream.
RR –How did the 80’s theme for 1984 album come about?
RLT – Our love of 80’s music, Orwell, and this crazy world we live in.
RR –Who would you say is your biggest inspiration in the music scene (Living or Dead)?
RLT – We all come from different backgrounds of music… which is what I believe gives us our unique sound. Ranging from Duke Ellington to Bootsy Collins, Dr. Octagon to Parliament, etc….
RR – There is such a unique blend of genres in your music. Is it easier to start with let’s say for example the Electronic aspect over the Funk or vice versa?
RLT – There is no easy or hard… it’s just do… and you do whatever u gotta do to realize the vision.
RR – So the band is based currently based in New Orleans – How does being in NOLA inspire your sound? Do you guys get the chance to see a lot of live music yourselves?
RLT – Yes, we try and get out as much as possible. In NOLA there’s music everywhere… it’s up to you to go get it.
RR – How did you all meet? Did that happen in New Orleans or had you worked together before?
RLT – Andrew Block and I met while playing with Gramatik which led to me moving to Nola to start a band with Andrew. We found Deven along the way through our mutual friend Alvin Ford Jr. Andrew had played a few shows with Deven, in the Eric Bloom band at Sonic Bloom.
RR– How do you compare playing and writing music as a band to producing and performing individually?
RR – Do you have a favorite song to play live?
RLT – All of them really. Getting to perform is one of the things in life that we all really cherish.
RR – One final question. What were your favorite Halloween costumes growing up? Any costume plans for this year?
RLT – It’s a secret….
