What does it take to become a YouTube sensation? In 2013, almost anything can become a world-wide phenomenon. For Adam Shin, it was just spending a few months remixing a tune that came up as random background music in a YouTube video. He said that he was drawn to “Get Lucky” by its complex rhythms and decided a simple piano cover wasn’t going to do.
So he downloaded Mario Paint Composer and got to work. It’s pretty unbelievable that the end product has the exact same rhythms and melodies as “Get Lucky”, it just sounds like it came out of a Mario game. Who knows, perhaps Nintendo will use more of Daft Punk’s singles and Adam Shin’s fantastic composing talents for their next video game soundtrack considering how well it all fits.
Want to try your luck at Mario Paint Composer? Adam Shin outlined a few of his secrets:
“The mushrooms are the bass drums, the hearts are the bass line; that airplane, I used for the guitar that you hear most in the song. The ghosts and the coins were some softer guitar and piano sounds; they’re a little hard to hear, but they add flavor overall. The Game Boy sound is the actual melody.”
