Sometimes, you want something different than bar crawls and Irish Car Bombs. Not that we don’t love a good Irish Car Bomb, but we’d choose our love of music and festivals over any pub, any day. Whether you’re Irish or not, for this month-long St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Get Lucky in Salt Lake City had us covered, and we felt exactly that, lucky.
After the incredible time and vibes that Utah and V2 Presents gave us at Das Energi festival in August 2016, we jumped on the opportunity to attend the first-ever extended, two-day Get Lucky. It was another beautiful weekend at the Great Saltair, with all of it going down without a hitch.
This was the 12th anniversary of Get Lucky, and with the production, stage setup, lasers, lights and in general running of the festival, it was easy to see why. With a warm (and quick) entry, you entered another world to fill your senses, with an atmosphere that felt like a secret hideaway.
The main stage was open, far and wide, with a massive stage setup on you left as you entered the realm. Decked out in green, gold, and of course shamrocks, you knew you’d arrived at the best St. Patrick’s Day destination. Heading upstairs, all of those 21+ could grab drinks, light up a smoke (not the green kind) on the outdoors balcony, or stay inside and enjoy the horseshoe balcony where everywhere had a great view. A perfect getaway from the vibrant crowd below. Walk past the stage and emerge outside to catch some fresh air on you way to the Tent of Gold. Hoopers, poi, glovers, orbs… an army in full force lighting up the night. Within the Tent of Gold, it was a hardstyle haven. Three panels of visuals, separated by intertwined Celtic designs had your eyes gazing while each artist challenged you to see who could go harder, the beat or your moves.
From local SLC talent, to worldwide artists, Get Lucky had them all. With original tracks and flawless sets, artists like Z&Z and Ill Deff made their state proud. The crowd went hard for them all, openers or closers. Our favorites that brought down the house on day one included Audien, Gammer, Morgan Page, and Skellism. Audien’s set went off without a hitch launching into a wide array of genres that transitioned seamlessly. His classic remix of Bastille’s “Pompeii” hit the decks, and as everyone lost it, we had to capture it.
Closing out with Skellism, their set was a rope of hardstyle intertwined with trap, what Skellism is known for, and absolutely does best. At one point, we were convinced that the tent would damn near collapse.
Day two delivered artists that need no introduction including Nero, Snails, Noisecontrollers, Riot Ten, and JOYRYDE. Noisecontrollers played classics and originals, with remixes of some of everyone’s favorite electro tracks. JOYRYDE mashed up banger after banger, keeping the energy high and continuous, with a laser show that had our eyes readjusting for hours thereafter.
Last but not least, a shoutout to Funtcase, who easily played one of the best dubstep sets we’ve ever had our ears blessed with. Whether harder electro wubz, or that silky and nasty stuff, we hope that we are all lucky enough to get our hands on that set someday, and fast.
We want to give a shout-out to the fans, the dancers, the head-bangers: the people that matter. The vibe of both Das Energi and now Get Lucky at the Great Saltair have been welcoming and loving, including the staff onsite and everyone involved leading up to the event that we worked alongside. Salt Lake City truly is a four-leaf clover, and their dance music scene is one to revel in.
Get Lucky showed their true colors, and we couldn’t have been happier to have been a part of it. Thanks to V2 Presents for being a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Be on the lookout for announcements for Das Energi 2017 so that you can get your chance to experience it yourself.
