Getter was apart of the stacked lineup for Middlelands and was able to catch up with us for an exclusive interivew. The L.A. based producer, Tanner Petulla, never shies away from playing with his sound, whether it be grinding dubstep, beat heavy trap, or relaxed, melodic synth work. Growing from releasing singles on Ultragore Recordings, to touring with Datsik, and now having his own label, Shred Collective, Getter is always looking to grow. His EPs Radical Dude, What the Frick, and his recent single, “Inhalant Abuse” are an excellent showcase of his unique electronic sound. With the recent drop of his single “WHO DAT?” under rap alias, Terror Reid, Getter has proven just how diverse his production skills really are.
Raver Rafting was able to sit down with Getter to learn about all of his upcoming projects, music and otherwise.
You have expanded your production with your new label, Shred Collective. Music-wise, will you stick to working with EDM, rap/hip-hop, and metal artists?
I’m just doing whatever I feel. Obviously, most of my friends are EDM but I’m trying to get more on there. I’m kind of over EDM. I love it, I love making it. But you got to grow out of something and try new things. I love it and I’ll be doing it for a while but I’ve been making other music now and it’s so much more fun.
Will you be playing with your sound as Getter? Trying different sub genres of EDM or stick with the sound you’ve worked towards?
Yeah, I’m definitely going to keep doing Getter. I’m doing an album, and I think it’s going to be my last for a while. I don’t think my next thing will be music. I want to try something else. I’ll still do music, but I want to make movies. Not comedy like Simi Valley, but stuff that would blow your mind. I keep having dreams and I wake up and right them down. I now have a catalog of them that could be movies.
You’ve come out with the rap alias Terror Reid. What’s in store for that project?
I don’t really know, honestly. I don’t know what happens, it’s not me but it is me. I feel like I’m going crazy, I swear to god. I’ll make a beat and then it’s there. That’s it. I go to bed and I wake up and it’s done.
Do you think you’ll come out with an album with him? Or are you just testing the waters?
Yeah. Like I said, I don’t even know if it’s me. I think I’m turning into a schizo. If you asked me to rap right now, I couldn’t. If I started rapping, I wouldn’t remember it. It’s weird shit going on in my brain.
Will there be a mashup/collab between Terror and Getter?
Maybe, if I figure out what is happening with me.
I saw that metal is coming soon under the Shred Collective. Will you be getting back to your roots and play or mainly produce and manage?
I’ve already made half the album, and it’s me on drums, guitars, and vocals. I’m doing everything, but it all sucks except for the vocals.
At this point Pouya comes in and says hello.
Pouya: You have a dad haircut. How how many kids do you have?
Getter: 5.
Pouya: Are you recording on your phone? Hey guys it’s me, Pouya! Love y’all!
Getter: But yeah, the metal project. It’s all me right now but we’re going to get guest vocalists and guitarists. I’m trying to build relationships with metal bands so I can work with them.
Do you think once you start working with metal bands that you’ll want to help write the music or mainly help with producing?
I want to write everything and have them come in and sprinkle their own vibe on top. Everything I do is my writing, but obviously, if it’s a collab it will be different. I’ll make a song and throw it to Phil Bozman from White Chapel, and ask him to do something with it. It’s kind of like how they do it in rap and EDM, but no one does that in metal.
You’ve been releasing a lot of killer Shred Packs. What is your favorite thing involving that process?
It’s cool because I feel like when people don’t make their own samples, they’re not willing to put it out. It’s kind of just like, ‘Hey, I already did this, so you can have it.’ It’s cool because I use a lot of samples for my drums and it’s cool to see when people use yours.
I read an article where you mentioned stepping into a mentor type of role. Do you feel that making all of these Shred packs is your segue towards that?
I just want to show people the right way to do it. I mean there isn’t necessarily a wrong or right way but there is a messed up way and a chill way, I guess. People keep doing the same things as everyone else and they wonder why nothing goes the way they want it to. I just want to set the example before I dip out. I just want to show everybody this is how I did it and it’s not that hard to get where you want, you just need to do your own thing. You got to put in the work.
That’s where Shred Collective is. It’s literally only my friends. We might get some people to sign, but we probably won’t. I’m just keeping me and my friends close because it’s your real friends who you can rise up with. Instead of rising up by yourself and being rich, you and all your friends are all up there and rich. It’s way better. I’d much rather have me and my friends each have 100 grand then me being really there and my friends have nothing. I just want to show people that, because it’s better when your friends are up with you.
Just a couple of fun questions. So you’re roommates with Nick Colletti. Are his lips real? Does he do super intense duck face exercises?
Yeah, they’re real. It’s funny, because his parents don’t have them. I don’t know where he gets it from, but all of him and his cousins have the same lips. He just came up in a family with some dope ass lips.
What is the funniest or cutest thing that Budders does?
He snores so loud. He never puts his tongue away but when he does his teeth come out. And he got injured last week, he got bit by a dog in a dog park. So he’s in a really tight bandage, he can move but he doesn’t want to. So every time you pick him, he grunts. He sounds like a human. He’s my little homie.
We finished the interview with a hug and he asked if he could rock our Middlelands hat and bandana. We hope you get some good use of them.
