Girls of the Internet is a long coming project from English DJ and producer Tom Kerridge. Having always had the idea to create a techno-ey disco live band for several years, Kerridge decided to get the ball rolling and released his premier track ‘When U Go’ during summer ’17. The track is filled with minimal drums, dub rhythms, and harmonious vocals. We sat down with Kerridge to learn more about his plans with GOTI and how it all came about.
Is Girls of the Internet a one-man band or do you work with other musicians?
I’m the main producer and writer, but I have a small army of muscians and singers I kind of use as well. For example, on ‘When U Go’ I worked with singer-songwriter Segilola. I heard her solo stuff somewhere and I just thought “she’s got a great voice, and she’s a great songwriter”, so we started working on a project., That’s really difficult to find – there’s so many singers out there with really amazing voices, but it’s so hard to find someone who can write too.
Where did the name ‘Girls Of The Internet’ come from?
It was inspired by a group called Eighties Ladies, they released an album that was produced by Roy Ayers and released on his ‘Uno Melodic’ label. My favourite track of theirs is ‘Turned Onto You’, from their album ‘Ladies Of The 80’s’, and I pinched the name from them! But I wanted to make it sound a bit darker, a bit more modern.
What’s next for GOTI?
We want to make albums, do some shows. I love DJing, but I’m keen to get a full band together and play live. The live show features vocalists, guitar, bass, keys, as well as synths and samplers.
Safe to say Girls of the Internet is new and refreshing in the world of underground music and so far, the road Kerridge and his music militia are taking is heading in a great direction. Stay tuned for new releases coming from Girls of the Internet’s in the coming months!
