GoldFish is a band creating some of the most innovative house music out there today. Dominic Peters and Dave Poole incorporate far more instruments than there are band members into their live performances, which are always high energy and a ton of fun. Earlier this month GoldFish dropped a new album, Late Night People, which delivers a healthy mix of the horn-heavy deep house that GoldFish fans love, and some new styles that truly show the breadth of their skills and musicality. Read our exclusive interview below to learn more about these talented producers and their new album, and check out Late Night People after the interview.
RaverRafting: You recently released a new album, Late Night People – what do you want to tell fans about this album?
GoldFish: This is our fifth studio album and we are beyond stoked with how it’s turned out. It feels like we have managed to incorporate all the best parts of our earlier sound whilst still progressing and evolving. It’s got a bunch of great collabs and features and there’s definitely a song on there for everyone. Plus our Mums like it and they are our most honest critics.
RR: The title track of this album is such a feel good kind of song, and particularly because it’s called “Late Night People” it feels like a true anthem for the dance music community. Can you tell us a little more about the motivation behind this track?
GF: That’s exactly what we were going for. Late night people is like the community and tribe that we are all part of. It doesn’t matter what sub-genre in Dance music is your thing, we are all after the same feeling. It actually started as more of a novelty track and we thought it would almost be a bonus track. Once we secured Soweto Kinch to guest on vocals though things completely changed and it went from a novelty to an anthem. It was cool to give ourselves permission to make this track and I don’t think we would have gone where we went on this track a year ago. We have matured into our sound and aren’t afraid to take risks…this time it paid off!
RR: You really branched out in this album and expanded into new areas with your sound. The examples that come to mind are “No One Has to Know” which is fairly mellow, and “Bad Luck and Trouble” which has a real country vibe to it. Were you aiming to experiment with this album or was that just the natural result of your creative process?
GF: Honestly, it was just a natural progression. We definitely weren’t thinking about it and we always follow the song and how it wants to ‘come through.’ Like we said before, we definitely have freed ourselves up a bit more and since moving to the states, we’ve been exposed to so much new music and mindsets. It doesn’t all have to be 125 bpm house.
RR: I never knew how much I needed a “Little Lies” remix until I heard the one on this album. What are some of your other favorite Fleetwood Mac songs?
GF: Ha Thanks! Little Lies was always a massive tune for us growing up. Dreams and Rhiannon are also keepers.
We had made a bootleg remix of it and hadn’t even mentioned it to anyone. We dropped it in our set at Ultra Music Festival in Miami for fun. Our label A&R head Jeroen called us and was like “Who’s remix is that?” We said it was ours and he said “we have to release it.” Rest is history.
RR: This album is full of collaborations with other really talented artists – do you have any fantasy collabs of people you’d love to work with in the future?
GF: A lot of the artists we would love to collab with aren’t alive anymore. Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald would be amazing. We love original old school jazz.
RR: What’s the origin story behind the name GoldFish? You guys really take advantage of the pun opportunities that come with the name, which is wonderful.
GF: It was a play on my supposed short – term memory, or lack thereof. When Dave and I first met, even before we started GoldFish – he used to call me that for losing my phone, keys wallet…but able to recall and 100’s of song chord structures. The name stuck.
RR: Related to the last question – The Swimteam is quite possibly my favorite artist fanbase/family name out there. There’s no real question here – just that whoever thought of it should be proud of themselves!
GF: Gotta thank our manager Jay for this one! We always try and hook up our superfans and the swimteam is like a special community of GoldFish fans. It’s awesome hanging out with them whenever we can and many have become close friends.
RR: You have a series of shows coming up in South Africa, where you’re from, called Submerged. Have you ever considered changing the name to Cape Town Hometown Throwdown? In all seriousness, tell us about these shows. Will you be pulling out all the stops for the local crowd?
GF: Submerged has become part of the fabric of Summer in Cape Town so we probably would never change the name. Although Cape Town Hometown Throwdown is basically the perfect description for what happens! They really are amazing parties for us and our crowd. We always make a special effort with these shows, production, guests and the whole experience. Cape Town will always be our hometown even though we live in San Diego these days so we always want to give them something special.
