A DJ’s worst nightmare may be actualized in the near future, as Google has supposedly planned to patent “Hand gestures to signify what is important” – which includes the infamous ‘hand-heart’ gesture. Filed in 2011, a United States patent has recently surfaced alongside Google Glass, which is referred to in the patent as “A wearable computing device, which could include a head-mounted display (HMD) and a video camera, which may recognize known hand gestures and carry out particular actions in response”. Google Glass users would be making hand gestures to indicate what they would like to capture in a photo, or to signify the act of “liking” something on Instagram or Twitter, which would then be recognized by the device.
This would definitely be a blow to the live performances of several DJs and producers, namely Armin van Buuren, Hardwell, and David Guetta, who make frequent use of the classic hand-heart gesture. I guess EDM artists will just have to come up with some other creative way to send their love to the crowd. Feel free to send them suggestions!
