What do you get when you add a hula-hoop, a GoPro, nipple pasties, the desert, self-expression and pretty girls together? Artist Rob Volkel from Venice, California found out at Burning Man 2012. “They flirted, danced and finally mated, conceiving an awkward little Hula Cam contraption,” the introduction to the viral video with a trippy point of view states. In just a few days, the video comprised from taping a GoPro camera to hula hoop in the Black Rock Desert collected 2.5 million YouTube views.
Burning Man, a festival and celebration of self-expression, community, art, and self-reliance, attracts tens of thousands of participants every year. In the hot, dry Nevada desert, community members create the festival themselves and leave no trace when it’s all said and done. It’s one of the largest gatherings of hoopers annually from around the world. “This started with a simple idea when I duct-taped my GoPro to a hula-hoop and took it to Black Rock City,” Volkel told hooping.org.
This video is not safe for work and could make you dizzy if you’re prone to motion sickness. The track is “Language” by Porter Robinson. Happy hooping!
