Though he has been making music for many years, Of The Trees is now at his most popular thanks to association with Psymbionic’s Gravitas Recordings and, more recently, Liquid Stranger’s label Wakaan. With two new tunes out this week, as well as a freshly released Collab EP with DELTAine, Of the Trees is ready to wow Great North Festival with his unique style of psychedelic trap and bass.
Many Great North attendees will already know Of The Trees as this will be his fourth consecutive year playing, but this time he has a whole slew of new tunes to hype the people up with, all while taking them on a sonic journey.
“The Chrome Knight” is the producer’s most recent tune, released on the new, Space Jesus curated, Wakaan compilation. The tune mixes metallic percussion with trippy syncopated synths and chopped up vocals, all laying on top of a bed of 808 kick drums. Like many of the artist’s songs “The Chrome Knight” continues to build on itself over the course of the tune, changing up an element or two every section while keeping its traditional foundation.
“2 Wicked” is a melodic collab between Of The Trees and Psymbionic that once again establishes a theme before continuing to expand on it. Its captivating melody and backing marimba do a beautiful job setting the stage for three grimy, yet focused drops that keep the listener invested for the entire five minutes.
But nothing can better display Of The Three’s diverse tastes and styling than his most recent solo album Dream Atlas which, as one might expect, explores sounds and influences from all corners of the world and the producer’s brain. Despite being so bi-polar the album does have a sense of cohesiveness and energy, even in its chiller songs.
