Today we are finally presented with Griz’s “Hard Times”, the first single off of his highly-anticipated sophomore album ‘Rebel Era’. “Hard Times” is a slow, melodic track that features a high influence of the blues and soul. The guitar rips through this tune, and the emotion emanating from it is clearly audible. There’s some great use of the brass as well when Griz plays some blues-like notes from the saxophone throughout. Griz’s production prowess shines through about halfway in as the song culminates into shattering synths and thunderous bass. Still kept downtempo, this break in the song plays more of a role as unfurling of emotion than a mechanism for crowd reaction. With that being said, it will surely be a hit during Griz live sets, with the ability to surprise and overwhelm an unsuspecting crowd.
“I made it as the first chapter in the long romance story of Detroit – as I see it. Heres an Electro Soul Future Funk tune that I couldn’t be more proud of!” – Griz on “Hard Times”
