Last Wednesday, GRiZ and his Super Shagadelic Tour stopped by Philadelphia for the latest show in what’s been a wildly successful East Coast run. Bringing along All Good compadres Muzzy Bear and Big Wild, the night was set up from the start to be one of pure, unadulterated groovy beats.
Calling home to The Fillmore, Philly’s brand new venue suited the vibes of the night perfectly. The Fillmore packs almost a warehouse-type feel, but with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling it certainly had the feeling of a more formal show. The main room is seemingly just as wide as it is long, which is a welcomed change up from the normally sardine-packed feeling of most venues today.
I had my doubts heading into the show on how the turnout would be, but the venue was absolutely packed for a Wednesday night. Unsurprisingly, the highly dedicated fan-base GRiZ attracts came out in droves, and if you didn’t know better you’d swear it was a Saturday night. In all likelihood due to the layout of The Fillmore, despite the great turnout there was always more than enough room to move around freely and never feel too constrained while in the crowd.
Some people may get the feeling that the majority of fans right now crave trap music, or maybe some cookie-cutter fist-pumping big room house. However, if you were at this show, it was all the proof you needed that there’s still as big a demand as ever for live instrumentation and old-school funk. Take a look anywhere in the room and you’ll see attendees from the ages of 18-60 shuffling their feet around and getting down to some downright filthy sax solos.
Showcasing Chasing The Golden Hour Pt. 1 in all its glorious live style, it’s clear that this is a collection of tracks meant to be heard live. Every song has room for Grant to take a quick left turn into an impromptu sax solo, and each one matched the previous selection perfectly. Keeping it fresh with tracks off Say It Loud and even some throwbacks off Mad Liberation like the always crowd pleasing “Smash the Funk” x “Cozza Frenzy” mashup, there was never a stale moment in the hour and 45 minute long set.
What this show proved was that the GRiZ project is pushing full steam ahead as one of the most unique and unmissable live shows in electronic music today. As the Super Shagadelic Tour winds down, the GRiZ Fam will need to bide their time until GRiZmas touches down in Detroit on 12/19. For those of you who still don’t have a ticket, they’re selling out quick and the show will sell out.
