Whereas many dubstep producers seek to create choppy and almost jarring effects with their bass lines, Clark Kent champions a sound with a thicker & more consistent low end and delicate, ambient melodies – a style often dubbed “lovestep” that has been popularized by the likes of Kill Paris & Singularity.
Recently, he made a facebook post mentioning that he had a Festival Trap remix of ‘What Is Love’ by Haddaway in the works, and I immediately became excited. Though his normal sound relies heavily on intense bass lines that hit as thick and heavy as a brick wall, I had faith that he’d be able to translate his skills to Trap and maintain that “lovestep” feel.
He rose to the occasion and spit out this masterpiece – a remix of a song that everyone remembers from SNL and Night at The Roxbury. After a short build, the record breaks into the synth refrain from the original tune over a clap beat that hypes the original sound up without taking away from it. When the song drops, the synth line becomes chopped & staccatoed, and this comes across nicely with the trap drums behind it. True enough, he brings that “lovestep” attitude to the song and creates something that, if I hadn’t heard it before, I might have guessed was made by Sound Remedy.
Kent then brings in a melody created by sliced & pitched samples of the vocals, it’s both catchy and slightly goofy sounding. ‘What Is Love’ is almost universally known and reminds people of the silly, fun aspects of dance culture, and these vocal chops touch upon that idea perfectly.
By adding his own spin on the song without losing the recognizable and loved aspects of the original, he hit the nail on the head and produced a track that will be a festival anthem of 2013. Friends will be mouthing these vocals to each other with silly expressions on their faces all summer long.
