We’ve all experienced it: Not being able to get as close as you would’ve hoped or trying to marathon through a festival, and especially, when you aren’t able to hear a word anyone says up to weeks after an event.
Due to our mentality that louder is better, our ears are taking a pounding and potentially causing permanent damage. All of us seasoned concert-goers always have one regret when thinking about the past. We should’ve worn earplugs at live events. Especially now that it is inevitable to go a whole night without a few dozen dirty bass riffs, it is imperative to do what your mother always taught you and wear your earplugs.
Heavy bass is not only affecting concert goers, but also famous DJs and producers alike. An online report just announced that by 2015, 35.8 million people will be diagnosed with some type of hearing loss. Recently, Zedd has taken to social media to express his concern with the sudden hearing loss in his left ear. Many DJs (famous or not) are publicizing their hearing loss experiences via social media and community board posts. These professionals are preaching the importance of protecting your hearing because frankly, hearing loss is irreversible. Most of us can relate, hearing loss would be heart-breaking because music is our entire life.
What does the Bass God have to say about earplugs?
Recently, Bassnectar has been passing out earplugs to fans at his shows including a massive campaign at Moonrise Music Festival. Lorin is educating all of his fans and encouraging them to “protect yo ears” when listening to any kind of music. Campaigns like We’re hEAR for You and EarPeace are partnering up with local bands and festivals to make sure that hearing loss becomes a thing of the past.
If you are a master live-event attendee, the foam earplugs that you can buy at gas stations and convenience stores may not be right for you. Evolving from cheap earplugs to professional grade earplugs will help save your ears from damage and give you exceptional sound quality.
A few favorite type of plugs are Earpeace HD earplugs and Etymotic HighFidelity Hearing Protection. These earplugs are great because they are comfortable and highly unnoticeable. They are the same quality as any high dollar earplug, but are more affordable – around $20 a pair.
Think about it: a $20 pair of earplugs can save you a lifetime of hearing damage, which could potentially set you back thousands of dollars in medical bills. More importantly, what if you could never hear music again?
Protect your hearing by actively preserving your ears with earplugs at every event whether it’s a festival or club show. You should never allow your ears to be unprotected for any noise greater than 90-95 dB (the sound of a loud power tool).
If you experience a ringing in your ears, your head starts hurting due to loud music, or simply can not hear the person next to you when they talk, do the right thing and step back from the stage.
Still want to experience the show up-close? No problem, just get yourself a pair of earplugs and rave on!
