There’s no denying it, everyone loves a little funk in their life. With big room sounds taking over the past two years, it seemed like funk had dwindled in modern dance music. But then came Oliver Heldens who took funk straight to the main stage. The 19-year-old producer started the year producing in his bed room and ended up in the studio with name like Sander van Doorn and Tiesto. Safe to say his style caught on.
Between appearances at Tomorrowland and EDC Las Vegas, debuting in the UK at #2 with his single “Last All Night (Koala),” which is available on iTunes, and countless remix jobs, it seemed that Heldens had a full schedule building his brand. But along with producing and touring, the Dutchman wanted to play a curator role to showcase artists that he believed should be heard. And then, Heldeep Radio was born. Every week, Oliver Heldens releases a free hour-long mix chock-full of groovy jams by producers that are on his radar. We here at White Raver Rafting have picked our favorite episodes of Heldeep Radio to feature and give readers a taste of what Oliver Heldens is listening to.
Episode #1
Of course, we had to start at the beginning with Episode 1. In the first episode, Oliver Heldens blends the talents of Cazzette, Tchami, the Magician, and, of course, his own remixes to blend sounds of past and present. In the mix, he has three special tracks labeled Heldeep Classic – a throwback track, Cooldown – a more relaxed track, and Heldeep Halfbeat – a slower but still groovy track.
Episode #9
For the 9th episode of Heldeep Radio, Oliver decided to give listeners a special treat by giving away his live set from his Tomorrowland debut. During his set, Oliver Heldens previews many of his later released tracks along with his own personal mashups. He also mixed in the sounds of Chocolate Puma, Mr. Belt & Wezol, and many more showing the world deep house’s crossover to a live set.
Episode #17
Heldeep 17 really impressed us when it was released because Oliver Heldens really demonstrated his creativity and stepped outside of the box with his curation. Not many producers are able to smoothly mix the styles of Mynga, Zeds Dead, and Netsky while keeping listeners intrigued. Oliver Heldens continued to impress his fans with his wide ranging taste in music while effortlessly mixing usually opposed genres.
Episode #24
Heldeep 24 was simply just a jam sesh. Who wouldn’t love Shiba San, Calvin Harris, Bakermat, and A-Trak blended into an hour of fire? Heldeep Radio is just another testament to Oliver Heldens’ golden ear for all music that is good and funky. As a man of many trades, Heldeep Radio will continue on its trajectory upwards in 2015.
