Sonny Moore, better known by his stage name Skrillex, hosted a wildly popular Reddit AMA for fans yesterday – reaching over 500 comments. Ain’t nobody got time to read all that! Luckily, your friends at WhiteRaverRafting have sifted through the good, the dumb and the downright thirsty to bring you everything you need to know from the conversation so you don’t have to.
Q. How does it feel having your own Disney character? –
For those that haven’t heard, Sonny will be appearing as a cameo in Disney’s most recent film, “Wreck-It-Ralph” DJing a party. After contributing a few songs to the soundtrack for the film, it was only natural that when producers were looking to fill the role – Skrillex was their first choice.
A. Its fucking crazy… waaaayyy crazier then winning grammys in my head.. still pinching myself…
Q. Gotta ask it.. Why did you release a remix of Bug Hunt and not the original? The original is way too good to remain unreleased forever.
A. It was meant to just live in the Hero’s Duty scene of Wreck It Ralph… also its not really a full song. It was just sort of made to fit the scene of the movie. I’ve just moved onto so many other things since i finished working on that movie.. But perhaps one day i’ll open up that project file again and complete it…
But forreall… didnt realize how many of you really love OG bughunt… Puts a new fire under my ass to finish it, put it out… but here’s the question.. There are 2 versions..Which to do prefer? The one i played at Tomorrowland 2012 Or the one thats at the end of the “Skrillex in Mexico” clip?
Q. So we know deadmau5 is probably one of the better known trolls in EDM, like when he wore your phone number on a t shirt at the Grammys. Have you ever been able to prank him and if so, how?
A. Response from fan: “I don’t think you could prank deadmau5. That would probably require him to socialize and care.”
Skrillex response: “True”
Response from fan: “Quite the opposite, him and sonny have been good friends over the years.”
Skrillex response: Yeah its all fun and games at the end of the day… All though changing phone numbers is pretty annoying.,…but i guess thats the purpose of a prank. hah I don’t really have the energy for pranks… I feel like mau5 would go to the bitter end to get the best of me.. Im just not up for that sort of challenge
Q. How was your experience working with A$ap Rocky?
A. Amazing,.. really organic and fast. He’s super talented and has a lot of input…
Q. Are there any moments that comes to mind where you just sat back and thought “this is why I make music”?
A. YES… ! Honestly, this AMA is pretty fucking awesome.. sort of one of those moments where I really get to see the passion (for better or for worse) people have for their Skrillex opinions.. I’m thankful people care at all.. Something i don’t take for granted.
Q. What’s your dream collaboration? Also I met you at warped tour in like 2005, I remember you had giant hands. Big fan!
A. Lol Giant hands! never heard that one before… Dream collab is always a hard one to answer.. always changes with my mood.
For people who are into the harder “dubbbbZZZsTEppZZYYY BosSTEPZ” sounds.. im really fuckn’ with these kids right now! Super unknown but SO raw… https://soundcloud.com/dubloadz https://soundcloud.com/trollphace
Q. We’re producing nerds who will take everything you say and process it like Socrates explaining the meaning of life. That’d be a good AMA for those who used to be like you, learning the craft and trying to make something we’re proud of.
A. its really all about energy first, mix second for me at least…I could get into this and not stop typing foreverefveveveeerrr
At the end of the day it’s DANCE music.. dancing is supposed to be fun. Dance music should be fun to… I don’t think it’s meant to be taken so seriously… it’s not politics. More so than a genre, I think success has to come with being open about your personality, doing YOU and not giving a FUCK what people have to say. Those are the people who catch my attention at least. I come form hardcore and punkrock.. I came from the uncool lunch tables. I feel like there’s this jock elitist mentality when it comes to dubstep in particular which is so against everything I stand for. BEING yourself, and not giving a fuck what others think. Not judging others.. For fuck sakes it’s just MUSIC. stop taking it so seriously and have fun.. And if you dont like something, then just fkn forget about it! 🙂
Q. Did this hurt?
A. yes that shittt hurt for sure!
Q. This gif actually became a big hit in concert technician circles because he fell on a moving head (the lamp on the ground).
So on behalf of all of us: we know you’re okay, but what happened to the moving head?
A. Lol moving head is fine… Im so glad that moment got caught on camera though.. that was actually the first thought that came to my head after the pain chilled out.. i was like “FuK i hope somebody filmed that”
Q. The OWSLA artists are pretty much all awesome. How directly are you involved in picking them? Was deadmau5 mad you poached kill the noise from mau5trap? Why isn’t What So Not playing at ultra?
A. Lol… Well we didn’t poach KTN.. he only did one single with MAU5 and that was after we already released his first EP… And yes im 100% involved with picking the artist and the creative stuff.. we are just a crew of freinds really..
Q. Skrillex, what song blew your mind the most, the first time you heard it?
A. thats a good one… as far as electronic goes…so hard to pick one… Of course there are my classic influences like Daft, Justice, Aphex, whatever… But man i can remember when i first heard FirePower by Wolfgang Gartner.. it FUCKED me up … so good
Q. Hello, Sonny!
- How do you process vocals?
- What are some of your favorite VSTs that few people know about?
- Do you have / have you ever had tinnitus?
A. Im using lots of stuff! Depends on the sound, song… there’s no right way. But WAVs CLA vocal is nice to throw on to get that pop sound… I use melodyne alot for tuning, getting weirder sounds… And no knocks on wood i have had tinnitus but it try to take care my ears as best as i can
Q. Yo Skrillex, got any big plans for Super Jam and Bonnaroo? I never expected to see you hosting, I am intrigued.
A. Dude… YES.. man this is SOOOO much work putting together.. but going to be rewarding seeing it go down knocks on wood.. But of course its all about the surprises so you’ll have to wait mwuaahuhuhaah 😉
Q. Thanks for doing this AMA! What has been your favorite spot to perform at? Or what city/state/country has the ‘best’ audience?
A. its a hard one…I think different crowds for different reasons. Anyplace that has Latin, Spanish vibes, like Spain, South/Central america, Mexico tend to be the craziest crowds… People in Japan are pay the most attention to detail… its all differnt.. Norwegian and swedish crowds tends to have the hottest girls 😉
Q. What’s your very best life advice?
A. keep GOOD/POSITIVE people around you.. You are the company you keep. If you surround yourself with with creative, hungry, and productive people, it will make you have to step up your game… if youre around lazy people who complain then you’ll never grow as a person.. keep good people close!
Q. A few questions that I really have for you are: – (A “few” million)
- Why don’t you sing more often on your tracks? I guess I know that you have had throat problems since FFTL, but you know that a massive portion of your fan base absolutely loves and adores your voice and it’s kinda sad that you don’t do it more often. Your vocals on the few tracks that have it are incredible.
- Would you ever go back to using your MacBooks and Ableton for live shows? Again, I guess I know that you probably wouldn’t but a large majority of your fans loved the M Audio Trigger Finger and MacBook combination that you tore it up with.
- A while back you mentioned to one of my mates putting some super old demos/tracks like Slats (one of my favourites, release this pls :c) that you had no plans for to ‘release them’ on Facebook. Of course this never happened, but could it? Again, approximately 99.5% of your fans literally have dreams about this sort of thing happening. There’s so many tracks which you’ve never set free which people would love to hear the way it was supposed to be heard.
- GiantFishyLazer is wondering if the track with the Jurassic Park sampling is Skrillex or Dog Blood, and what your dream collaboration with any artist ever (alive or dead) would be.
- AdamZOMGhuit is curious about how the remix process works. What songs do you decide to remix? Do you just hear something sick and be like ‘yep, this is getting remixed’?
- Corruption93 wants to know why you often go through several iterations of tracks that you play live until one of your songs reaches its release state (and sometimes it never does). What makes you ultimately decide that a song is in its final form, and what prevents you from releasing other songs?? (Examples would be Levels, Devil’s Den, Goin’ Down, Kyoto)
- MeUpvotesta asked, you make so many great tracks, and I was wondering about the process behind it. How do you decide which sounds to make, how to piece them together, and where to go with the flow of the track? How is this different during collaborations?!
A. I guess my reservation has been the expectation of me singing live if I started singing more on my tracks..I also know that one day I’ll do something else that includes more of my vocals…
Im not against laptops… I had a lot of fun doing my ableton sets.. lots of people though it was a “spacebar” set.. but i was launching clips live.. i really like the effects and beatrepeats… But honestly, I have the most fun on CDjs… they are just raw and i like the feeing of being able to fuck up more… I dunno!
Slats project file doesn’t exist anymore, it was on my stolen computer so the only versions in existence are the ones flouting around online =/.. But sooner or later YES i want to upload some of my older stuff… but for now im just looking forward
re GiantFishyLazer :The jurassic park sample track was just a DJ tool i made..
re AdamZOMGhuit: Yeah.. I like doing remixes because its inspiring .. I chose to do them cuz its fun!
Corruption93. Sometimes it’s the first version, somtimes it goes through so many changes.. I also like that my demos leak… it kind of lets the tracks live in different spaces.
MeUpvotesta: I try to keep an open mind.. my ear to the ground. always listening the what the new kids are making, and never forgetting my influences..
