On Sunday the director of Hulster County emergency services requested the aid of the American Red Cross for those still stranded at the Hudson Project festival grounds, nearly 16 hours after the event’s third day was cancelled due to an approaching thunderstorm.
The Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter of the Red Cross set up a shelter at the Kiwanis Ice Rink at Cantine Field in Saugerties, N.Y. for the hundreds of festival attendees stuck in flooded parking areas. Though the shelter was equipped to hold up to 500 people, only 47 used the shelter, most likely because of its off-site location. A charter bus was arranged to bring people from the festival site to the shelter, where meals and snacks were served until 2:30 p.m. today, when the area was finally closed.
The Daily Freeman News reports that 500 cars were still stranded at midday today. Tractors and other heavy equipment have been used to extract remaining vehicles from the massive mud pit.
