This past Saturday ill.Gates took to Facebook to announce that if he got 500 likes he would make public his set from last year’s Shambhala festival. He ended up getting nearly 2k, and we are now gifted this work of art. In the same light as Bassnectar and his colleagues it’s near impossible to find a live set from the talented Canadian. Here though we are treated to a glimpse of what makes an ill.Gates set so unique, and it in no way disappointed.
Starting the hour long voyage with the familiar synths of his hit collab with Bassnectar “Expanded“, you can tell this is going to be one to remember. With seamless live mixing and chopping throughout this is a set to show to the irrational thinkers who say electronic music is “monotonous and pre-recorded”. Throwing in ill.Gates remixes and edits of nearly every other track, it’s cool to see an artist being able to keep a set fresh while including so much of his own work.
A few tracks in you’ll hear the always classic “Pink Lady” by Feed Me find a spot in there accompanied by the vocals from Gate’s “Pick It Up“. Keeping on par with everything he’s known for, there isn’t a dull moment to this set. Every time you think you know a track, or think you know where he’s going to go with it he’ll change it up on you. To my surprise one of my favorite tracks on here is “Illest” by Far East Movement and Riff Raff. I know, you might initially be put off when you see who made it, but it’s a nasty addition to the middle of his set.
He might not be a popular name in music right now, but “Beast” by Mimosa allows the crowd to get the trap out of their systems before ending it with back to back ill.Gates originals. Wrapping it all up with his relaxing “Orange Sky“, it’s the cherry on top to an expertly laid out set from start to finish. Never does a track seem forced or lazy, there always seems to be a method to his madness. With sets like these all it should do is show the public what electronic music can be. Forget your Top 50 DJ’s and pre-recorded sets, this is where the good stuff is at. Take a look at the track list below and catch ill.Gates at Shambhala next week for another dose of the madness.
