Bunny (of Rabbit in the Moon fame) may just have spilled a major announcement. On the radio show “Drop Show”, Bunny revealed that he has an upcoming release on the yet to be officially announced Insomniac Records. Bunny also details how past Discovery Project winners will also release songs on the label. Considering Bunny is the Artist Director of Insomniac, his indirect announcement of the upcoming record label holds a fair amount of credence.
This record label could very well offer rising producers a chance to shine. Given Pasquale Rotella’s down-to-earth personality and dedicated involvement in his festivals, Insomniac Records would likely scale back from the often suffocating stipulations found in many record labels. This label appears to directly compete against Ultra Records, a record label known for its wealth of famous artists and releases. However, Ultra Records has been associated with straining their artists with strict guidelines and very little artistic freedom. Deadmau5 was perhaps the most notable artist to share disdain for Ultra Records, citing restrictions on his album content and releases. After Ultra Records and Ultra Music Festival combined, it appeared as though the relentless Ultra business met no match.
While the record label has yet to be officially announced, Insomniac Records will likely present much safer and liberal release criteria than Ultra Records. While Ultra Music Festival now caters to the wealthy, EDC Vegas has gradually increased ticket prices while rewarding attendees with numerous benefits and a number of spin-off festivals. Pasquale Rotella clearly prides himself under a different artistic vision than the heads of Ultra and his dedication to fair use will most likely be translated to this new record label. The competition between the two labels should hopefully yield in fairer practices and quality releases.
