With almost 100K following, MMXVAC is one of the most influential SoundCloud channels in the trap and bass game. Starting out as a collective that supports artists ranging from future bass to trap, MMXVAC has unique story that has yet to be told. Jhonathan Dossa aka producer SCRVP, one of the founders of MMXVAC, shares what went into creating it, what’s going on in the future and everything in between in this RaverRafting exclusive interview.
MMXV started as a collective, how was the initial seed planted and how did it turn into a label?
Around early march 2015 I received a twitter msg by a friend that asked me if I had a second to chat. He pitched the idea of mentoring a group of producers and pretty much guiding them along their careers. We started a group chat and came up with the idea of starting a collective.
I took the project under my wing and decided to branch out. We started getting a lot of attention and really good demos from upcoming artist, so I decided to make MMXVAC about curating great music for the world to hear.
What is MMXV’s current focus? What big partners has MMXV worked with, how does it make you feel to work with other industry people like that?
We’ve worked closely with blogs like Run The Trap on premieres and just recently released an official remix for NGHTMRE, Pegboard Nerds & Krewella’s track “Super Star” by Sloves and SWRVN. We also had UZ sign a track we released by a new artist called UNKWN. It’s always cool to see something you’ve put so much effort into get recognized. We don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
What comes into play when deciding what you will and will not release as MMXVAC release?
One of the things I pride myself in is listening to every demo I receive. I’ve realized that you can’t dismiss a track because of the way it was sent to you. I know a lot of labels that require or prefer a different format of submission but to me music is music. I look for production quality and creativity. Good music is good music. Most trap records are made to be played out so if I feel like it could fit into a set played by any artist at any festival then I accept it.
What are some common mistakes you see producers make with their trap productions as well as their marketing? Any advice you’d give them?
A production tip I would give an upcoming producer is to be yourself. Everyone tends to follow trends, but I think being your own trend is priceless.
What style/trending elements of Trap is your favorite right now?
I really like how the future bass sound has transformed main stream pop music. Guys like Flume, DJ Snake, Diplo and The Chainsmokers have really pushed the bass genre forward.
What were some of the dopest moments that took MMXV from a “random” SoundCloud channel” to one of the top Trap and bass curators we have today?
There’s been a bunch of great moments to pick from. I’d say having artist that I look up to support the majority of the tracks we release is always a great feeling. Being able to release a track for an artist and have that give him a boost on his career is why we do what we do.
What are the short and long term goals with MMXVAC, whats planned for the future?
We plan on hosting our own shows in 2017. That is all I can really say about that right now 😉 As for long term goals, we plan on expanding and strengthening our foundation to be a permanent part of the music industry.
