Everything is important when forming a label. Artwork, catalog, marketing, PR, etc. – and Next Wave has nailed it.
The LA-based label is riding a massive hit that landed late last year via Louis The Child’s “It’s Strange”. Scoring everything from shout outs, to a huge act of support from Taylor Swift aka ‘New Songs that Will Make Your Life Awesome’ List, and, of course, millions of plays and impressions world-wide.

Next Wave has kicked off the new year by letting the stream of solid content continue, today dropping an astonishing 20+ track remix EP, containing many revisions of the hit “It’s Strange”. The EP beautifully expresses a spectrum of sounds that many haven’t heard, but all will be hearing more of in general this year, undoubtedly.
Also today, Manila Killa, a multi-talented musician who’s solo stuff is just about as famous Hotel Garuda now (which he is a half-member of), unleashed the chill-pop vibes of “All That’s Left”. The tune fits well into the Next Wave family and has all the infectious qualities that “It’s Strange” had.
You can also find the tune on this week’s New Music Friday.
Yet, “All That’s Left” made me conceptualize just how many musicians, indie and dance artists alike, are attempting to capture this type of chill “sound” recently – you hear tracks like this on Spotify playlists all the time – but a good handful end up sounding generic and monotone, pretty much like the last guy you heard.
Next Wave supersedes this with an unignorable level of originality that instantly catches your attention – something that Manila’s “All That’s Left” embraces as well.
Broadly, today’s Next Wave releases are a snapshot of a new subculture that’s made its mark and continues to evolve. Dance music has many corners, but this label is one of the newest and coolest directions it’s taking, serving music that is great for everything from the club to r&r.
Many members of the Next Wave are quite young – embodying a group of individuals with backgrounds in dance music curating, of one type or another, who’ve pulled together tools, connections and premium tastemaking to create something that’s clearly working.
The music industry is filled with thousands of passionate entrepreneurs with great ideas, Next Wave is a fascinating example of how to do things right – in part, by pushing the limit of genres instead of trying to re-deliver current ones.
