Acoustic surf rock hero, Jack Johnson is apparently a huge fan of dubstep. That doesn’t mean you should expect to hear anything electronic in his new album though.
Speaking to The Independent, Johnson says, “I love [dubstep], man. That ‘wom wom wom’. As far as electronic music goes, it’s probably my favorite.”
It was an unlikely statement from the man who’s most known for his surf inspired folk-rock, but appreciated none the less. Johnson displays a keen understanding of the music industry, saying that he knows that there are certain perceptions about his character and music that he doesn’t avoid.
“I feel part of a tradition of singer-songwriters, of playing acoustic guitar and sharing songs. I’ve always felt like a traditionalist. I appreciate other people pushing boundaries but I never really felt like doing that with my own music. If I listen to Mississippi John Hurt then I want it to sound like the blues. I don’t want to hear Bob Marley doing jazz, you know?”
Jack Johnson embraces what made him so popular and chooses to create similar sounds instead of innovating. He doesn’t feel like that’s something he should do and that fans are looking for a particular style when they buy an album or come out to a show. For someone who has sold over 18 million records, it’s impossible to argue with him.
Johnson remains an avid surfer more concerned with the waves than anything else, but if sometime in the future he wants to start making some island inspired dubstep, we’ll be listening.
