Jason Ross has reached a monumental moment in his career, with his new EP Rooms giving us slice-of-life views of what has made the artist who he is today. Ross has been enveloped in the world of trance since 2013, with his very first single, “Nightfall”, tipping off what was to be the beginning of rising talents and one of the top artists to keep an eye on in 2019. It wasn’t long until Ross found himself on Anjunabeats with his 2014 release, “Elements”, which already showed a different approach with underlying tastes of psy that many fans can’t get enough of from his current production.
Fast forward to a heaping collection of singles and EP’s later, as well as working with and having support from a slew of artists like Illenium, Seven Lions and Above & Beyond, Ross’ career skyrocketed to incredible heights. He landed himself in the limelight once again in 2018, from touring with Ophelia creator, Jeff Montalvo, and ‘Til the End artist MitiS on The Journey 2, performing at EDC Las Vegas, Electric Zoo, Digital Dreams, and Red Rocks, to having immensely successful releases and collaborations on Ophelia with Montalvo on their Oceans EP, his emotive single with Karra “Into You” and “Don’t Give Up on Me” with vocalist Dia Frampton.
Now Jason Ross makes his return to Anjunabeats for 2019 with his magnum opus, Rooms. This six track EP frames his journey from the beginning of it all to now, with each song representing important moments in his rise in the world of EDM. The title track, “Rooms”, gently pushes us into the odyssey. We feel ourselves drifting into beautiful melodies that encircle us with a wonderfully dark bass keeping the current steady. The transition into “Close Your Eyes” is so smooth we almost don’t realize it. We get a glimpse into Jason’s childhood in Minnesota, as the artist looks forward into what adulthood has in store. The inspiring lyrics with vocalist Jonathan Mendelsohn have us calling our mom’s to tell them thank you for everything and we love you. Ross then rev’s up the BPM for “East of Eden”, a reflection on his frenetic 10-stop tour in China. You can feel the hyperactive energy fueling the synth work and implacable rhythm.
He takes us even deeper and darker with “The Gorge” with Dimibio, showing off his psy trance skills with pulsating synth climbs and ominous levels of bass. Of course, this is homage to what Ross considers to be a pivotal moment in his career, the iconic B2B with Seven Lions at the Washington Gorge Ampitheater in 2017. After the slow build, Ross has us hanging for that highly anticipated moment to just lose it at the drop. We transition to the next room with the intensity whispering to a close before we get the haunting piano paired beautifully with Emilie Brandt’s effortless vocals in “IOU”. Ross takes on a different hat, representative of the multifaceted L.A. music scene and how differences thrive and inspire. He then closes us out with “New Dawn”, with percussive symbols and chimes flourishing together with the melodic piano touches, leaving us in a sense of wonder and excitement as the future slowly lays out in front of us.
Jason Ross has given us a piece of him, a look into the most pivotal and personal moments in his life. It’s rare when artists share so much of themselves and the rising producer did it with finesse. We are immensely excited to see what else Jason Ross has in store of us in 2019 and with this being the first of the year, we know it’s going to be absolutely phenomenal.
