Jon Hopkins and Moderat seem like a match made in heaven. Both legendary producers of downtempo and ambient electronic music, the two have welded a very welcome friendship that includes experimentation of each other’s work. Jon Hopkins remixed Moderat’s “Last Time” earlier in the year and now the German duo have returned the favor by remixing Jon Hopkins’ “Abandon Window.”
Originally a track distinct for its choice use of sorrowful piano keys and glitchy drums, “Abandon Window” morphs into a more vivacious beast under Moderat’s command. The piano keys of the original, now spliced to chugging drums, waver in the background as a dark cascade envelops the listener. High-hats, later introduced in the remix, deceitfully tempt the listener to dance but not before isolating everything back to the original’s breathtaking melody. By the end of the remix, Moderat once again chops up the piano into a glitchy drum beat surrounded by faint but unmistakable horns.
While remixing an artist like Jon Hopkins seems blasphemous, Moderat add their own dark spin to “Abandon Window” and pay proper respect to the original track. Emotion heard in electronic songs like this has become a bit of a rarity and we welcome the breath of fresh air the producers exhale for us to enjoy.
