Pencils of Promise (POP) has been an organization that we’ve been seeing a lot of lately. From their extensive work with 3LAU’s label, “Blume” and now announcing Justin Bieber as their Global Ambassador. Justin played a pivotal role in helping POP expand to the high-need region of Eastern Ghana this year. Bieber may be the site of bad press sometimes, but without his help POP may never have been able to expand from the Volta Region to the Eastern Region.
For those of you who are unaware, POP was founded in 2008 and its main goal is to increase education for those underserved in developing areas like Ghana, Guatemala, Laos, and Nicaragua. POP first started work in Ghana in 2012. Since then and through Bieber’s support, POP has built 64 schools there has another 35 in progress. Bieber is donating $1 to POP for every ticket sold during his “Purpose” tour. Because of the money generated from his most recent tour, POP already has 7 new schools in construction in Eastern Ghana. POP presented the Global Ambassador award to Bieber just prior to his sold out show at the Barclays Center in NYC. This is what Bieber had to say after being presented with the award.
I’m excited we’re able to educate more kids in Ghana because of the Purpose Tour. This is amazing.
Similar to 3LAU, this isn’t the first time Bieber has worked with POP. He previously donated $1 from all ticket sales in 2010 from his “My World” tour. He followed suit in 2013 and again donated following his “Believe” tour. Collectively, Bieber has raised millions of dollars for POP. He’s funded over a dozen schools and has provided access to education for thousands of students. Here’s what Leslie Engle Young, POP’s Director of Impact, had to say about POP and Justin.
Pencils of Promise is growing every day, not only providing kids with safe buildings to attend school, but also with programs to help them learn to read and write. It’s because of partners like Justin that we’re able to bring quality education to the kids who need it most.
Bieber visited one of the schools built by his donations in 2013 and POP will have his continued support in the future. However, you don’t need to be extremely wealthy to help POP succeed. Thousands of people have donated to support POP’s goal of increasing education and you could be one of those people. POP’s donation page can be found here. Stay tuned as we’ll have more information coming soon about POP (wink wink).
