Justin Jay is more than your typical ‘USC bro.’ The LA producer is not only a senior at the University of Southern California, but also a highly-respected producer that is on the premier roster that is Dirtybird Records and has already played at Holy Ship! and HARD Summer before even graduating. To continue his string of success, Justin Jay will be releasing his fourth EP, Momentum, on one of house music’s most revered labels, Pets Recordings.
The tracks that constitute Momentum dabble in various realms of the house world. “How I Knew” pays homage to Motown while infusing Justin Jay’s signature deep cuts. The only collaboration on the EP, “Momentum,” looks towards fellow Dirtybird ally Kill Frenzy to spark a warehouse-inspired dance floor heater. Finally, Justin Jay’s light-hearted approach to music shines in “You Give Me Butterflies” as fans get to see a more tender side to the producers usually sinister flair. He manages to transport listeners back to a much simpler time in childhood and describes the process in creating the track as:
As I’m finishing up an incredible last year of college, and getting to do all of these amazing things in music, it’s felt natural making happy, lighthearted songs that really capture my mood these days. I’ve spent a large part of the last year exploring darker sounds and textures. I definitely want to continue experimenting in that direction, but I wouldn’t want to neglect my goofy, cheerful side either. “You Give Me Butterflies” is a carefree day at the beach, spent with your friends, acting like 8 year-olds.
Justin Jay has released the teaser for “You Give Me Butterflies” below in preparation for the entire EP’s release on March 16th.
