Kicking off his project in 2016 with the iconic full-length album New Age \ Dark Age, Karma Fields has quickly risen to the top of the electronic scene. This artist stems from the genius of producer Tim Nelson and embodies powerful monochromatic themes, dark cinematic sound design, and mind-boggling visuals. Fields has worked with Tove Lo, Talib Kweli, and other musical figureheads, accumulating over 100 million collective streams and creating chart-topping masterpieces.
Another revered member of the music industry is gifted vocalist Kah-Lo. She exploded onto the scene with global phenoms “Fake ID” and “Rinse & Repeat”, collabing with Riton. 270 million streams later, Kah-Lo has exponentially expanded her following and has jointly forged hits with some of the biggest names in dance music, such as Diplo, The Knocks, and Selena Gomez. Now, these two legendary artists have come together with Associanu, an LA-based EDM collective (consisting of Karma Fields, Tove Lo, Samuel Luria, and more), to construct their infectious new single “It Girl”.
Released on the distinguished label Sweat It Out, this groovy house heater boasts a spellbinding bassline and seductive vocals from Kah-Lo. Speaking on the inspiration behind this track, Associanu says, “‘It Girl’ is meant to capture an attitude – fun, sassy, badass, effortless charm – the sensation of walking into a party, feeling good about yourself, like ‘you are IT…girl’” With the inclusion of ethereal chord progressions and lively bells, “It Girl” is a house-infused anthem that is destined for the hottest clubs and dancefloors.
Karma Fields to the time to chat with us about a few subjects, including “It Girl,’ charting on Billboard, Associanu collective, and more.
Exclusive Interview
Hey Tim! What message do you hope people take away from ‘It Girl’?
With “It Girl” we all wanted to make a song that you can hear anytime and anywhere and it makes you feel confident. It’s really all about confidence for this one, confidence in who you are or who you feel like you are.
How did you get connected with Kah-Lo for this particular release?
Kah-Lo was really the dream collaborator for the track. In dance music, there are very few people who exude the type of attitude that Kah-Lo does, and luckily enough for all of us she felt the same about the track.
Was there a moment during the creation of this release where you knew ‘It Girl,’ would for certain be released to the public?
I actually tried a few other vocals on the track before Kah-Lo and I collaborated. Everyone was into the beat for a while but it was missing something vocally. Once Kah-lo got her hands on it, though, it was instant. She just got it and we all knew we had something special.
When was the first time you charted on Billboard and how did that feel?
I’ve seen a few dance tracks pop up here and there over the years on Billboard Dance. Never thought too much of it, but I actually had my first proper charting this year with some work I did for 5 Seconds of Summer. An unlikely collaboration maybe, but their album went to No. 2 worldwide and it was cool to be a small part of that.
What is the mission behind music collective Associanu?
The whole goal behind Associanu was to make music that our friends would like, and beyond that just do whatever we want. In our own respective projects and careers we all have dedicated so many years to building a brand and a sound or style, but with that comes limitations. It has to look this way, it has to sound like this, what are the fans expecting, etc. With Associanu, we just wanted to make music and visuals that are fun for us and that we would want to play for friends and hear at the parties we go to.
How did 2022 treat you altogether, net-positive all things considered?
This was a big for all of us (Associanu crew). We all live together in Los Angeles and during the pandemic lockdown we were making music the whole time. In 2022 all of that music started coming out. A lot of the songs I made with Tove Lo have either come out as part of her album or we turned into the last three Associanu releases or we used some of it for our releases with Pussy Riot and some other things in the works. With all of that running now it’s nice to focus on Karma Fields and Associanu a bit more. “It Girl” is really the start of this new wave of dance music that will be coming all next year.
