Charleston, that was a party. Kaskade brought his Freaks of Nature tour to the Music Farm on Tuesday night, spinning all of his tracks in epic fashion to the sold out crowd of a little more than nine hundred people. This is the same Kaskade who headlined at EDC Las Vegas in front of a hundred thousand of people, who sold out the Staples Center and will play in front of ten thousand people tomorrow night in Baltimore, Maryland. Insomniac (Sugar Society) brought the tour here to develop the scene and build interest for electronic dance music, but will they succeed?
Charleston is a curious place. Dubbed America’s Paris by Vanity Fair, Charleston is a city where the youth culture is confused, currently in a period of evolution. A culture clash between traditional Southern affairs and the big flashy night life that we crave. There are no lounges or clubs here that you’ll find in comparable cities. Strict laws ensure the downtown area remains guarded to preserve its historical nature, as the city sees an influx of different types of people into the area. The technology scene is flourishing having recently ranked in the top 10 fastest growing for software and internet technology (VentureBeat) thanks to the likes of TwitPic and Amazon’s CreateSpace, while the two colleges College of Charleston and Citadel attract students from around the country.
So can electronic music work here? Well if Kaskade is any indication, then yes it can and will. With masterful precision, Kaskade controlled the emotion and temperance of the crowd by flowing from tracks off of Fire & Ice to #KMM mashups like Be Still Ladi Dadi and Fire In Your New Antidote. Biggest reaction? The much anticipated Llove (Dada Life Remix). Balloons were dropped and confetti was sprayed covering the attendees who could have kept dancing all night. The attendees faded out a little after one with some looking to keep the party going, others more eager to return home to share their experience with their social networks.
With dj’s bickering like the Kardashian’s and Paris Hilton leaching onto the scene, it was a refreshing reminder that no matter what’s going on around us that it will always be about the music. Go out and see dance music.
